what was hard about painting them?
Just curious, since I have a set of Murano wheels for my FX35 snow tires that I was going to paint.
I just painted some 2005 Maxima 17s and it didn't seem that bad. I cleaned them really well, sanded them, cleaned them again, primer, paint, clear.

the little stars around the center are not finger friendly. Very difficult to sand smooth. Also, the OEM paint is tough as nails. If i were to do it again, i would just scuff and paint. Forget stripping/sanding/primer bull****.
Well see how it turns out.

graphite base coat, silver and clear. dupli color high perf. wheel paint.
Apparently it gives a darker shade of silver, which is what I want for my car color. Bright silver doesn't look appealing because my sterling has a hint of gray/blue

red-primer fail. you know primer base color will affect the final paint intensity...
and make sure you wet-sand the dried paint before clearcoating to get rid of orangepeel paint finish.

Pfff...not ready yet. What else can I do?
2nd light coat of silver.

3rd coat, drying. Deciding whether to leave the dusty look or wetsand...

yea im still having trouble removing shiney spots. Wet sanding isn't really helping. 3/4 of the wheels have shiney spots, the other is near perfect. Im thinking of just redoing the other 3.
My new tires are getting lonely.

Not the best but Im happy because they at least match in texture...
What would happen if I DIDNT wetsand before the clearcoat?
This is what I have now...3 of the wheels were giving me a hard time and wouldn't grab the paint evenly. I need to practice spraying closer to get a wet look, but its hard to do without getting runs.

So, to wetsand or no?

As of right now, project is considered a fail in my eyes. Like some of you said, I needed to spray closer. I've was so afraid of running the paint that I did the opposite and just dusted it. I've wasted too much money to start over right now. Im going to finish them up, mount tires, and just ride them for a while.
hey man from personal experience painting the wheel with the tire on is mucho easier! so you have time to fix them later, plus most people mounting the tires seem to always scuff up the wheels you spent hours on. keep trying!!

Nah this was a 3 stage pearl white that I did. White base Pearl mid then clear.
Honestly it's really easy to paint wheels. I've rattle can 4 or 5 wheels then cleared and haven't had a problem. Just take your time and if your paint runs let it dry then sand the run out. That silver you're using is hard because of all the metallic flakes. Spray the wheels 5 to 6 inches away. About the can length and make sure it's not too hot out. Paint the wheels in the shade and let them dry in the shade. Sun and heat doesn't dry paint properly air drys paint!

What about in between coats? Are you suppose wet sand after every medium coat?
Say I did:
Primer
graphite
silver
clear
Do I wetsand in between all of those? also, When I wetsand, it just dulls the paint. It looks like it needs polishing cuz it looses it shine int hr process of making it even, do I give it another coat after this or polish it?

No no polish till after the clear. Sanding does dull out any color but once you add the clear it will restore the color you put down. Ok this are my steps.
Sand wheel with 400 grit
Primer
Color 1 light coat to adhere to the primer. Once dry do 3 or 4 coats I'd say 3-5 minutes in between coats and let dry for a good amount of time. Once dry sand till you remove all orange peel. This allows the clear to dry smooth so you don't have to sand any more. Umm 800 to 1000 grit should do the trick
I like using rustoleum clear for small projects.
Just a little FYI that high metallic silver you're using doesn't really turn out well when you clear over it. Trust me I've been there. If you want I silver color just go with the regular silver and it will look super clean and turn out very well.

well, here it is fellas. Not too proud but I didn't exactly have the necessary prep skills or location to paint in. Need's some polishing to remove orange peel. I made sure to put a lot of clear on thick to give me working room with the polisher.
The Artist, do you use a normal orbital polisher?

did you make sure you sanded smooth before you cleared? they look 10x better though!!
i havent ever polished my wheels. but is you sand smooth before clearing they should come out looking like this.

I couldnt. Damn paint was so thin I started cutting into the primer.
I didn't want to bother anymore. I've spent like 100$ on paint only to waste it by dusting it. This is just for now. I'll re-do them later when I have time.
What color silver is that? is that spray can? Looks awesome.
Is there any thing I can do NOW to make it look better? Like I said, i did wetsand the paint, but not glass smooth, just enough to get the rough grains of paint out. Should I even bother wetsanding? Also, do you machine polish or hand?

nah man thats pearl white.
id say just leave it because once they are in the sun they should be too bright to even notice. just mount them and enjoy the new wheels. if you feel so inclined to paint them again now you know what to do down the road.

Be honest with me guys....will these be Unbearable if i install them on the car?
I'm getting mixed feelings because some people say they look alright, and others are yelling "WHY DID YOU PUT GLOSS!"...
Feels bad man

^ They look alright bro. **** all the haters. Wrap em, mount em. If after awhile you do get tired or bored of em, THEN redo em. You may feel differently when you see them on the whip. Im a HUGE fan of 5 spoke Muranos on 4g Max's/1g I30's myself. Good choice. If you dont want em, I may just buy em off you
I guarantee you that whoever is mounting them will scuff the outer lip up and you'll have to touch them up. Like VQ said don't worry about other people. You're the one who will be seeing them. I've had tons of experience painting and painting wheels. We all start where you are and learn from each experience. Man I didn't even look that you're in la. Shoot I would paint them for you for free if you wanted!!
