Summer tires that will be used in the winter.
Summer tires that will be used in the winter.
Ive got 265 35 19's on the back of my car on g37 wheels. Anyways time to get new tires. they are wider then the stock size that comes with the g37 wheels and Im ok with that, The only issue is tire rack only seems to have summer tires in that size. I don't wanna change the size and I have the stock front size Bridgestones in the front which are also summer tires. Ive got my heart set on the Bridgestone RE-11's now my only thing is I don't drive much in the winter anyways as i try to keep the car garaged as much as possible but besides bad snow or cold weather grip, what other problems are their? like increased treadwear? treadnoise? or things like that I would experience using a summer tire in the winter. FYI Im in NY.
Also any feedback on the RE-11's feel free...

RE-11s are incredible tires performance wise but you don't need a tire of that caliber I guarantee it. Using them in the winter is completely retarded though. The rubber compound they use will get so hard in the winter that a hard stop on dry pavement would be difficult, let alone on snow with their tread pattern. It would be really stupid of you to follow through on this idea... don't do it.
I agree that you shouldn't use summer tires in winter. You might not make it into the drive way (or out of it either). We've had mild winters here in the midwest and I wouldn't look at summer tires because they won't have the grip you need on snow/ice. All season would be a better bet.
Still waitin on neiloc's answer. I would like to know more about this tire, only thing is my fronts are re050's and I want to keep the bridgestone thing going to keep them the same brand but for 15 bucks more a tire can you really go wrong with the re-11's?
It's damn near a race tire (i.e. you won't come anywhere close to utilizing it's grip capabilities) and because of that it'll just wear out really fast, it'll be noisy, it'll be harsh riding (super stiff sidewalls), and it'll be dangerous below about 45 degrees in the dry, let alone in actual snow or on cold wet roads.
It's like killing ants with a rocket launcher. If you aren't tracking the car or at least driving it really really hard, it makes no sense to get that tire as the compromises that have to be made are pretty severe and you will reap none of the benefits that it has to offer.

In that exact size, for regular driving (i.e. a car that will never see a road course) I'd probably get the Goodyear Eagle F1 Asymmetrics, they get really good reviews and are the cheapest tire available in that size on tire rack.
If you can go up to like a 275-30-19 there are a TON of options that are WAY cheaper and also AWESOME tires for the money. General Exclaim UHPs are the value leader and are really quite good tires, my buddy had them on his maxima and i recommended them for my other buddy on his G35 with 19s and he loves them. Hell almost every tire in that size gets wonderful reviews, and they are ALL cheaper than that funky 265-35-19 size. If you can go that route, that is DEFINITELY what I'd do. There's even a couple really good all season tires in there, if you REALLY wanna run your 19s in the winter. You'd be much safer on the Conti DWS for instance than you would be on any of those summer only tires in the winter.
I've said it forever, dedicated winter tires, even on OEM wheels is a far better choice.
I just had to sorta give my 2 cents because after reading what neal said re: Rocket launcher .. I had to...

I must be missing something because on tire rack in that size there are 18 tires (not including winter tires or track tires).

Thanks, I was actually looking at the conti ws before i read your whole pot as soon as I saw you stating 275 35s. The only thing is that I am droped on tien drop springs with kyb struts. Do you think Ill rub? If someone can chime in on that I will deff pickup the conti dws
More Info: Profile wise I don't see a problem as the new tire should actually be the correct up size, I have about 1 3/4" clearance from the top of the tire to the bottom of the fender. Is that enough travel space for the rear shock absorber (Aftermarket KYB Shocks)? Being that it is a 275mm wide tire. Will it rub the outside fender? The inside I seem to have a 3/4" clearance from the tire to the shock absorber? What do you think?
FYI: Im lowered on Tein drop springs, If I didnt mention that before.

As a update if anyone searches through this thread in the future. I went ahead and rolled the fenders and ordered the Continental DWS in 257/35/19. They should be here by the end of the week so I will update back next week sometime.
