Tire Cupping
Tire Cupping
I put new tires on about 8000km ago. Now they are pretty cupped in the rear and starting to a bit in the front. I'm thinking it's probably an alignment issue. With the lowering springs the rear end may have too much negative camber.
My question is, after I get my alignment checked and brought back into spec, will the cupping on the inside edge of the tire eventually wear back to normal as the rest of the tire wears down? Or will it always be cupped?

Probably stay cupped it ain't going to blend back in on the wheel happening to me also but instead of getting all 4 new tires for like 300 trying to get some new 18's hopefully before I'm bald on my tires!!
Extreme wear on the outer edges of your tire is most often the result of consistent under inflation. Under inflation causes the tire to flatten out and puts too much contact with the road on the outer treads, which then wear rapidly. However, if you've been diligent in frequently assuring that your tires are properly inflated, this type of wear can be the result of a curved or damaged steering element or may indicate the need for a wheel alignment.
I've just been told that my cupping was caused from not rotating them every 5-6000k miles. Whenever I did rotate it sounded like I was driving a Jeep, with the windows up. I have directional tires now, but am trying to decide to keep directional or switch to non directional.
Yeah they got rotated every 5000km. Basically at each oil change. I check the tire pressure every time I fill up. I had the alignment checked and it was within spec going in, and slightly better going out of the shop. I really have no idea at all why this is happening.
I've given up on these tires. I'm just going to drive on them till they wear out completely, should be the end of this summer. Then get a different set. I've ordered in new front strut bearings and will change the struts. I changed the shocks in the rear already as they were pretty cheap. I still can't find a reason for the uneven wear. It would seem that the front tires are cupping more on the inside edge than the outside.
My first set of tires lasted 60,000km with no issues. They were Pilot Sport PS2's. This set of Kumho SPT's are going to last about 20,000km with issues starting at 8,000km. I will not be buying these tires again thats for damn sure.

1. Tires on the non-drive axle not being rotated soon enough.
2. Suspension issues (usually worn out shocks or struts).
Underinflated tires will wear out smoothly on both outer edges of the tread block of the tire.
I disagree. Cupping is usually a sign of one of two things:
1. Tires on the non-drive axle not being rotated soon enough.
2. Suspension issues (usually worn out shocks or struts).

I've experienced the same "cupping" on my 01 Maxima. I currently have a set of Bridgestone HP 550 225/50R17. The inside edges of all four tires have a wavy pattern to them; worse on the rear tires than the front. I have about 30K on them. Rotate and balance every 5-6K. Had the alignment checked. Check pressures weekly.
So you all are saying it could be related to shocks (rear) and struts (front)? I bought these tires at Sears Auto. The customer rep told me that it would cost $1000 to replace the front struts. I thinks that is a bit high?
appreciate the guidance.
