What oil type and oil filter should i use?
ok, I'm planning to do the oil and filter change myself at home. My question to the gurus are
1-What oil type is best to use for maxima?
2-How much oil do i need 4 my maxima (approx)?
3-What oil filter brand, type etc should i use for my maxima?
Any links describing the procedure or precautions would be appreciated.

hooked with maxima forever!

IBBTEM
1) Mobil 1, Amsoil, those are my choices
2) 4 1/4 quarts
3) Nissan OEM Filter or Mobil 1 Filter (you use fram and i will never answer any question from you again)
FYI .. i am changing my oil and doing a write up this weekend if you don't mind waiting..

1) Oil brand doesn't matter as long as viscosity is correct (5w30). Use normal if your intervals are under 5000 miles, synthetic if you plan to extend it
2) Crankcase capacity is 4-1/4 qts with filter
3) Nissan OEM filter is very good (and its very inexpensive, ~$4.50 each)

Dino oil:
Oil: Castrol GTX (5W/30 or 10W/30)
Drain Interval: 3k on oil and filter
Synthetic oil:
- Amsoil 5W/30 or 10W/30 (contact iwannabmw for pricing; he sells it to you for close to his cost)
- Mobil 1 5W/30 or 10W/30
Drain interval: 5k initially, then analyze and adjust drain interval accordingly
Oil Filters:
Nissan OEM 15208-00001(Use the pre-2k2 oil filter for 95 to 2k1 VQs, as it is bigger)
STP S6941 (at AutoZone)
Interval use: 5k
Switch to synthetic ONLY after doing 3 or 4 3k interval oil changes if car is new. VQs take 10k or so to fully break-in.
Fill with a hair over 4 quarts, then re-fill after a day or two if needed.

i think i got ripped..i was thinkin nissan oil filter was round $5, it came out to be $7something...but that's ok
anyway, how come it's so hard for me to read the oil dip stick?
i bought 3 quarts and added CD2 and i had a lil bit of oil leftover from the last time i did oil change (very little)...so i think i used around 4qts total, probably a lil less...the CD2 is not a 1 quart(i think)...but when i read the dipstick, the oil is way up there...i even started the car up (to get the oil moving) and then shut it down and let my car settle for a while and the oil is still way up there on the stick
wat gives?

It was pretty funny when the VQ first was put in the Altima, every other oil thread complained about the dipstick for a while.

Holy thread bump batman!
Ironic thing is I was looking at this very thread after google searching about an hour ago.
K and n filters seem to be decent. I just bought a mobil 1 filter though...price difference of 5 bucks for me @ autozone, worth the extra bil..

its always funny seeing someone bump a old thread with serious intentions on helping not only to realize its an almost 10 year old thread. BUT the topic is still brought up daily almost. Guess this would matter if the 15 post rule was still in effect.

As a small tip, ( I do this with all my cars whenever possible) is to put some fresh oil inside the filter before screwing it on. This allows oil to get to those critical parts a little sooner and avoids wear on those parts that have been stripped of their oil during an oil change.

it does but you cant fill the filter up completely with oil or it will leak out as soon as you go to screw it on. I usually fill it to a little less than half and it wont spill out(every little bit helps). You are correct about filling it too much though.

LOL I used Castrol GTX 5W30 for the first 195k, back in the day the oil was a buck something! Somewhere just around 200k I switched to synthetic. Used to use the 9E OEM filters exclusively, but they started getting made in China, good bad indifferent. Been using WIX last couple of changes and whatever synth is on sale. Pennzoil Platinum last time.

My 97, with a mere 211,000 km, has been living on (dino) Castrol GTX 5-30 for 10 problem free years, just using a Canadian Tire filter. I change both every 5000km. I give it a little shot of SeaFoam every few months, which keeps the injectors clean and I find Shell gas provides the best mpg, by far.
