Trip Meter / Odometer Problems

Hi! I have a 1996 Maxima SE with (approx) 120,000 miles. My trip meter and odometer stopped working a couple of months ago. I recently drove to Vegas and when I accelerated to 90-95mph they both started working again. They continued to work the rest of the way there. On the way back it was the same thing - neither of them functioned until I accelerated to 90-95mph to pass someone. When I stopped the car and restarted they stopped working again. Any ideas?!?

the same thing kind of happens to me, only mine stops working when the engine is warm...maybe i should try opening her up to 95 to see if it'll start rolling again. so i'll definitely second this post with a huge cry for help. i haven't really had a chance to check it out yet, but i'd love to get it fixed.

thanks everyone,

J

I have a 1995 with the same problem. I've seen many posts on this problem but no one has had a fix. Did you get yours fixed? What did they do and how much was it.

Any help would be appreciated.

I went a local Nissan dealer while I was in Atlanta and he says the problem is the Speedometer Head unit. The service writer says it is $249 for the part and another $250 to have it installed. I talked to my brother and it isn't worth the money to have this fixed.

Just wanted to post what the solution is for those of you still searching for a fix.

Good luck.

I wonder if the unit can be removed and fixed? My brother doesn't want me messing with it. He would be really ****ed if I made it to where the speedometer didn't work.

well, i tore apart my dash tonight just to take a look at what replacement would involve...and it seems easy, the only problem i had was removing the motherboard from the back of the guage, but i was being extra gentle so i wouldn't snap anything. i think what i'm going to do if just find a used speedo with close to similar miles and hope the odometer works on that one. 250 just doesn't sit well with me.

Is this the first you heard about what is causing the problem? I've performed a search on the subject of odometer and it seems like several people are having this problem but no one knew the solution. I wonder if I could find a schematic for the motherboard and possibly find the defective component. Maybe it is cold solder joints which are common on the 4th gen clocks.

Good luck and post your results.

My 96 SE stopped working months ago also, and hasn't turned a mile over since. I tore the speedo out to see what the issue was and it's NOT serviceable at all.

$250 for a new speedo? Damn, junk yards here I come.
