Transmission delay going in to drive

Transmission delay going in to drive
When the transmission is cold and I try to put the car in drive it takes 10-15 seconds to go in drive. I checked the fluid level and its fine. I don't know what could be the problem?

What year? For it to be delaying entering Drive is there any type of clunking noise or jerking associated with it? Other more informed members will correct me if im wrong but that maybe normal or a sign of soon to be transmission failure because mine started out this way then went to jerking into gears then not going into anything higher than 2nd gear and boom...failure lol ,and this is my own personal opinion but I was always told to always let a car warm up first before trying to drive it...let the tranny and motor get up to operating temp before trying to engage Drive and see if it still has that delay. Did you perform a post search here to see if your answer or issue has already been posted?

Try changing the fluid if it has not been done in awhile. Maybe if the fluid is old enough the viscosity has changed enough to make it hard for the solenoids to do there job when its cold. Then as is warms up the fluid moves more freely. Just a thought

How's the condition of the fluid, looks bright red or a little brownish or gray? Smell burnt?
In case you do change the fluid, take a look in the old fluid bucket as well as inside the oil pan for clutch debris (chunks as well as powder).

Are you checking the fluid level correctly? All the auto's Ive owned require the car to be running in neutral on the level surface when the fluid is checked. If checked when off it will appear full when it is a quart or more low. If it is full, then it might be on its way out. I've used seafoam tranny fix and Dr tranny. to get a little more life out of mine. Both are just super high concentrations of degergents and lubricants that are in the fluid anyway, but if it helps, why not. Don't expect a full fix, if it makes it three months longer, you won

+1 change your fluid and see if that helps. I don't think the 4th Gens have a transmission filter so it should be a simple drain and fill job. I would recommend using Redline MT-90 fluid. I had a Saab once that was hard to shift in cold weather and the Redline solved the problem. You can get it online or at Pepboys.

And did you just tell OP to get manual transmission fluid for their automatic?
