Label with Federal or California Emmisions stated on car?

'98 Max

Is there supposed to be a label on our cars that states the usual "This car complies with Federal (or California, or Canadian) emissions blah, blah, blah" ?

I found the one under the hood, center, that has the technical emmision specs. But is there one that states the specific flavor clearly?

I'm thinking "no", but a vendor I am working with wants to see one (long story for later) and I don't recall one... The car is a few hours from me for a few months so I can't search it and I want to tell the vendor a definitive/true story.

Thanks,

look up the vin and it'll tell you where it was originally purchased from.

There should be a label that specifically states whose emissions the car complies with. But I have never looked at the label, I always look at the parts on the car.

Federal and Canadian cars will have an O2 sensor right behind the main car. You have to look from the driver's side to see it. The Cali cars will have a big, thick pre-cat attached to the bank 2 exhaust manifold, the one by the radiator, Fed and Canada cars will agve regular exhaust pipe.

Another way is to look on the silver tag attached to the firewall in the engine compartment. It is on the passenger side. It will have the VIN on it, but below the vin is an ID#. Look at this ID#. The 12th character from the left will be N for Canada, U for federal and V for California.

Yeah, thanks... I am familiar with all that... decoded the VIN via Nissan.

The vendor wants to see a photo of a sticker that states the compliance level like most cars have, but I don't think we have one of those.

Stickers can fall off, but that metal plate is riveted to the firewall. Take a photo of that plate. If that vendor knows his business, that should be the end of it.

It is on the underside of the hood and the pass side when the hood is lifted. It will say conforms to US EPA and STATE of CALIFORNIA

In other words there is no mention of "STATE OF CALIFORNIA" if it doesn't meet CARB standards.

The same is true today, only that I believe the only mfgs who still do not make 50 car states are the domestics.

I was careful to inquire on this when I bought my 2007 335i 9 years ago...imports stopped this a long time ago. I wanted Calif. emissions because I felt I could not fail anywhere with them, short of tampering.
