technical transmission question
it's been almost 10 years since I've been on this forum, I was one of the first pioneers on this site. I remember being one of the first ones to do a 5 speed conversion to my 4th gen maxima. Back then most modifications were fabricated from scratch and most things were just dreams. It's amazing to see how far the Maxima has become, I've read about all the swaps being done with the engines and whatnot. Although my modification days are over I recently purchased a 2001 Nissan Maxima se, automatic transmission. I have no intentions to make this car fast I just wanted to fix the problems that it had so I could give it to my wife. Yesterday I attempted to install a new CV axle, after ordering a new one off of ebay. When I removed the old axle and compared it to the new one I said to myself this does not look the same. I wish I would have stuck with my gut. Instead I attempted to install the new axle and forced it in. Once the axle did not go all the way, showing about 2 inches left, I relized it was stuck. I attempted to remove the axle with a crowbar, & I even put a chain to it attempting to pull on it with my truck. My truck just slid the Maxima sideways for about 4 feet. Neither attempt was successful. I came to the conclusion that I forced the axle so far in, that the ring on the end expanded, not allowing it back out. I believe the only way around this is to remove the transmission and knock the upper boot out from internally. My question is, is there anyway I can break down the transmission while it is installed in the engine bay? Or do I have to remove the whole transmission? If I could just get the piece off that holds the driver side axle, that would save me a lot of time. What are your thoughts on this?

Yes ive tried the crowbar and hammer. I'm at the point where I'm convinced it's not coming out, once my truck, which is a 5.3 GMC Yukon cannot pull it out I decided I needed to pull the transmission. I'm going to talk to the transmission shop today and see what they have to say.

The reason your truck is pulling the whole car I because it's still stuck and causing it to simply drag, one option is to take out the other axle and put a pry bar or some type of rod inside and hammer it, this way it will be pushing out rather than you trying to pull it out

great news
I fixed it! Today i was putting everything back together, to take the vehicle to AAMCO. For some reason i said to myself, let me pull on the upper boot just one last time. I grabbed it and it fell right out! I was like "holly Macrel"! I ran to advance, got a new axle, and put it right in with no problem.
Now putting the tie rod back together was a pain. Nissan is stupid by making a tie rod so hard to get in and out. After hours of banging and stripng bolts i said screw it. I bought a new tie rod end which fit right in.
The car runs great now!
