You can look under your hood and it will tell you what the timing mark should be. Use a timing light gun, attach it to pos and neg terminals put pickup clamp on plug wire for cyl number 1, trace it to the distributor. Aim the light at the crankshaft pulley, and you should be able to see when the light flashes the marks on the pulley and how the marks line up with the pointer. YOu use the haynes manual or look for a label under your hood near the battery side and loosen the dist bolt and rotate it by hand till the proper mark lines up. I think its the third from the left. Some folks advance theirs to get more power, to like 20 BTDC i think. Do a search for advancing the timing, it made mine kinda idle rough so I set it back. Also there is a link at the top of the forum to the chilton online manual it should also tell you the factory timing for your car. I used the cheaper gun from sears.
By the way setting the timing with a gun is not the same as setting the car to TDC when lining up the camshaft sprokets and crankshaft sprocket when putting the timing belt back on. So if you put the belt on without the distributor pointing to cyl 1 and all the other marks lined up you might have some problems. You probably know that already though.
I hope this helps, someone else may be able to correct me or give a better description. Good luck.

line the belt up with the marks on the sprockets when you take the car apart and then put it back together. You should not have to change or check your timing. If the timing was correct before taking the car apart it will be correct when you put it back together. BTW, checking the timing with a gun only tells you if the crank shaft is in correct timing, it tells you nothing about the cams. If the the belt is off on the cams the car will make a poping noise in the intake.
