lightweight wheels
i read somewhere that 15" maxima steelies weigh 40lbs w/tires. are there nissan alloy wheels out there that would bring that weight down? if so, which kind? thanx in advance!
Well, the weight of your wheel tire combo will depend on the weight of your tire too, but 96 Infiniti I30t wheels, the bbs mesh wheels, weigh 14 lbs which are a bunch lighter than the stock steelies.
Thanx for your answers! Im looking for rims sometime in the future - just bought my Max yesterday and it came with steelies. Nealoc187 mentioned the Infiniti wheels being really light, so I might just go with that. Any other light wheels out there?

There are tons of lighweight wheels you could go with. It depends on what your looking to spend. A quality sub 15lb 17"+ rim will cost at least $300 per wheel. In my situation I wanted light weight wheels but did not want to spend $2000 on new wheels and tires so I just went with my stock BBS mesh wheels at 14lbs. The only downside is that they are 15" which is not the best in the looks department. So if your on a budget and care more about go than show then some 15 or 16 inch lighweight wheels are a good option.

Can anybody add to this list?
Sub-20lb 17x8 rims that look good:
—SSR GT1 (pricey as hell)
—OZ Superleggera (no longer made in gunmetal but seem to be still on eBay)
I'm very picky about the wheels I'll put on my car. I'd get SSR Comps but I don't like their looks at all. In fact, I don't want any 6-spoke rim, I'd prefer a 5-spoke or (possibly a 7+ spoke) rim. Anybody know off the top of their head? I don't like Kosei and I'm willing to spend a fair amount for light (Ideally more like 15-16 pounds) 17x8s that look good.
I wish someone made a rim that looked similar to the Mille Miglia Evo 5 but was forged and light....

Check out TireRack, they give the wieght of most the wheels there. Sub 20lb 17's are pretty easy to come by for not too much money. It's when you get down to 12-13lbs is where it gets real pricey.
Motegi just came out with it's light weight wheel. It's called Trak-Lite. They are 5 spoke and come in black or gunmetal. The 15x6.5 weigh 10lbs. The 17x7 weigh 15lbs. and the 19x7.5 weigh 18lbs.
However, on the downside they cost from around $220 for the 15's up to $355 for the 19's per wheel, but if you are really serious about improving your track times I don't think it's a big deal. You could consider it as 2 mods in one. A cosmetice mod and a performance mod. Just thought I throw that out to everyone.
Here is a pic of what it looks like. I know this is a 4 lug rim but they come in 5 lug also.

Not bad, I like the gunmetal, but they don't appear to be made in 17x8. I won't even consider a rim that's less than 8" wide. You can tell a company makes good rims with an eye to performance when they make wider rims. If they make 19x7.5 etc, you can tell they're more into cosmetics.
What are you talking about, expensive? SSR GT1s are $359 each in 17x8 at Tirerack, so these Motegis seem pretty cheap ... good (forged) light wheels are expensive. If you buy a lightweight cast wheel, have fun buying new rims whenever you accidentally hit a big pothole or bump....

The TrakLites in 17x7.5 weigh 15lbs. so that's a 3lb. difference per wheel. Totaling 12lbs. lighter than the SSR GT1's. To some that may not matter but to others it does. So it really just depends on what you want. To each their own.
I don't like the Trak-Lites nearly as much as the GT1s aesthetically, however.

Thanks for the info, Dave. I've seen quite a few 17x8s, I wouldn't call it rare. 17x7.5 or 7 is much more common, true.
I want the 8" wide rim mainly for looks, I realize it's not going to give me any more traction.

I'm using Kosei Penta RT's, 17x7.5, which weigh 16.1 lbs. Got them for $650 shipped from maxed up.
Not sure how available they are these days, but they are nice, affordable, light weight wheels.
