Shadow's '97 GXE Auto Turbo Runs
Shadow's '97 GXE Auto Turbo Runs
Took it to Commerce last week for the Importfest Shootout and got in 8 runs with the recently tuned up turbo setup.
I got the best time of the day on its 4th run.
R/T: .420
60': 2.343
330: 6.129
1/8: 9.096
MPH: 82.71
1000: 11.666
1/4: 13.823
MPH: 104.85
I think I may have lifted just before the lights b/c I trapped the same as my two 14 second runs where I idled off the line and lifted on purpose(no helmet at the time).
One of those runs:
R/T: 1.116
60': 2.429
330: 6.305
1/8: 9.315
MPH: 81.94
1000: 11.901
1/4: 14.061
MPH: 104.85
The temp was in the low 90's and we were running from 11am till about 3 when the car started losing a tenth so we called it a day. I believe Commerce is about 1000' elevation.
The specs are:
'97 GXE Auto
T3/60-1 turbo (custom built by me)
stock motor
stock intake manifold
stock auto tranny(100k+)
VB Mod
Auxillary tranny cooler
Custom Clutch type LSD
19" ADR Wheels w/ 225 Toyos (60lbs a piece)
Full 3" exhaust and test pipe
Greddy Emanage
Wastegate spring regulated boost
The car dyno'd 301whp and 312.4ft-lb torque the night before at 7psi but the car would only see 7psi in 3rd at the track. In lower gears it was seeing 5-6psi max. We're putting in a Greddy boost controller as soon as we get the gauges and interior back in the car so expect much better times at 10psi soon. We're also looking for some 300Z wheels and drag radials to see if we can get it into the 12's w/o spraying.
The eventual plan is a small 30 shot to get the car off the line and 10psi going for mid-low 12's.

NICE! And you got a crappy 60' time. Goes to show that an automatic with 7psi can do some respectable times. If you would have gotten a normal 2.1 60'... you are looking at 13.3s. I say 2.1 is normal b/c you boost late in 1st gear and only have street tires. You probably don't reach the end of the 60 foot until 30-35 mph and I don't imagine you make much boost before 30mph.
But it's not a bad time considering it's one of the first visits AND it's 90+ degrees. Put slicks on it and race in 50 degree weather and you're easily in the 12s. But that would require atleast a 2.0 60', which I don't know if you're capable of b/c I heard something about you having bogging problems. I don't know the whole story. But I give you a

I'm seeing full boost ~35 mph, maybe a little lower. But that's only 5psi in 1st. What's happening is that we powerbrake off the line, anywhere from 1500-2500 rpm. We're still experimenting. But regardless of what rpm we do it at, the same thing happens. The car spins for a moment, and then bogs slightly as the tires catch. Then the car spools and off we go.
So I'm thinking that the ebc we're getting will help this. It will allow a slightly faster spool which hopefully cures that little bog. And it will allows us to see a full 7psi in each gear which should help tremendously.
I'm wondering if the heat had something to do with the bog. It was so hot out, and we weren't icing the manifold or anything. But in a month or so, the ebc will be in. Plus the intercooler sprayer will be installed. I hope that will cool the charge air somewhat and help. Also, I will be running a small shot of nitrous off the line to help with the spool. Around a 25 shot or so. All those parts are in my garage now, we just have to finish the car for some shows first. I want to run it on street tires first with all the new stuff just to see what it will do. Then I'm going to slap some radials on it. I really want to see 12's, even if it's just 12.99. The power is there, just have to get it to run the time.
On a slightly related note, my friend and dyno tuner just ran a 8.56 @170 mph in his street tire Supra

Nice runs especially in the heat. I'd say get some light 15s, short slicks, and a 500rpm higher stall converter. All that should land you in the low 13s pretty easily. Your 0-100' is the most important part of the race. It's good to see you're using the stock intake manifold because I think it's a far safer way to go when you're boosted. Having to deal with inconsistent MEVI operation is a nightmare and it's not something you want to be dealing with when you've got to worry about delicate A/Fs and such. Anyways, I can't think of any factory SC/turbos that use variable intake manifolds.
I'm going to try lighter wheels and drag radials soon. Along with all the other stuff I mentioned earlier, I'm hoping it will help the launch. I can feel the bog off the line which is killing the times, so if I can hopefully eliminate that, the times will drop nicely.
As for the MEVI, the inconsistent operation is precisely why I haven't gotten it. I'm looking into a custom manifold to help with high end power some.

IB 13.2 on DRs
Good luck and way to finally get to the track
Haha, we're not all dyno queens you know.
Though my car has made probably 60-70 passes on a dyno already (it helps when the runs are free).
I'm running the car again in 2 weeks in Bristol TN, so hopefully we can try a few new things and get some lower times.

I plan to, but I'm considering building the rest of the tranny too. Other than the VB and custom LSD, it's stock. I don't know how much longer it will hold out since it's original w/ 102K. I don't want to spend all the time to replace just the TC and then have something else fail. BTW, where would I find more info on high stall convertors.

Call them up and talk to Andre. If he isn't there, leave a message with the secretary and he WILL call you back. He's the guy that actually builds them.
I decided to go with them b/c they are easy to contact, easy to talk with and are willing to listen to me and what I want. I told him, I wanted to get as close to a 3000 stall as possible without sacrificing top end and without building up too much heat around Vegas. I got a true stall of 2800 and a stall of 2500rpm on my tach.
So my stall went from stock, 1800... to 2500. My 60 foots dropped from 2.35 to 2.17. That is with full traction each time. The 2.17 was done on 23" drag radials. So my gearing was better. I estimate that I shaved .15 in the 60 foot and 3 tenths in the 1/4 mile easily.
The more launching power you have, the better results you will get from a high stall. I believe I got my TC for $380 shipped. I forget.
But talk to Andre, tell him your setup. And he will talk with you on the phone. He didn't even require a core swap from me. Protorque does! Shipping gets expensive sending back a core across the nation.
Edgeracing has never done a VE TC, but they succeeded! I felt confident b/c they did a g35 TC for a guy and he was VERY happy. Then later on, he needed more tweaking done to the stall on his TC, so he returned it and they worked on it again... for like $100 or less!! I think he returned it b/c the stall was a little too high for what he wanted b/c traction was a major issue for him. Then he returned it again to get it tweaked some more to match his twin turbo setup on his G35 auto.
100% satisfaction is what they are all about!! And I believe it b/c when I saw 2500 on my tach, I wish it was higher. After talking with Andre further, he said he can tweak it more but he thinks I will lose top end and build up too much heat. He was offering to tweak it for free. He said, if 6 months down the road and I'm still not happy, he will tweak it for like $50-75. He made it clear that reguardless of what happens to my TC and I need it rebuilt, I will never pay that $380 ever again. It's a one time thing. I HIGHLY recommend these guys. One of the BEST experiences I've ever had with a shop.
Your other option would be Protorque and they just didn't appeal to me b/c I wanted to make sure I got more than a 300 raise in stall.
