1-2 shift, please comment

Alright guys, I want to know what u guys do on the 1-2 shift....Granny shift? Speed shift? Or how about powershift? **** how about a clutchless shift?

but anyway i wanna know what the reaction of other maximas who speed shift on the 1-2...when I say speed shift, you shift as quickly as possible by clutching in, letting off the gas, move shifter from 1st to 2nd, then dumping the clutch into the next gear while gassing full throttle...does your wheels spin like no tomorrow? does it give off a loud chirp and yer off? or nothing happens at all?

the reason I ask, I am gonna hit the track one more time before season is over...on the streets, when I speed shift 1-2...i spin for quite awhile until it grabs...I know I can granny shift it to cure the spin, but will I be losing too much time @ the tracks? Plz comment...and is there anybody who hit their personal best by granny shifting the 1-2?

It depends how much power your car has. With a vq35 and normal street tires I'd just speed shift it. I powershift my stock 95 because it doesn't have enough power to spin them excessively. I didn't powershift my 96 because it had enough power to spin them enough to hurt my time. Granny shifting is just a waste of time period. If your car has enough power that you are going to spin the tires if you go WOT in second immediately then just don't go WOT in second immediately. But don't shift all slow and waste time that you could be accelerating at least partial throttle. You aren't going to optimize your time by doing that.

Of course you could just try all methods out for yourself and see what works best for you...

By your definition I speed shift when I am racing. I just try to switch gears as quickly as possible then smash the gas. Also what is a power shift? Is that staying in the gas and just pushing the clutch in and slamming the next gear?

When I say powershift I mean I use the clutch as normal but I don't let my foot off the gas. That may not be the official definition but that is what I mean when I say I powershift. Shifting without rev matching or using the clutch a synchromesh transmission will destroy synchros in minutes.

hmm...sounds interesting...anymore comments?

Neal - My vq35 spins if i speed shift the 1-2...not just a regular chirp, but spins for maybe 1-1.5 seconds? From your experience, has most of your PB's come from speed shifting the 1-2 and spinning the front tires for 1.5 seconds cuz u mash the gas full throttle....or does it come from speed shifting the 1-2 and modulating the gas to spin less and chirp more?

With my NA car that went 13.8 @ 102 on the street tires I would just speed shift and deal with the spinning of 2nd gear for the second or so that it spun the tires, I didn't modulate the throttle at all after the launch. I kept my foot on the floor (except during the 1-2 shift).

What were your mods when you ran that time?

For me, I'd be at WOT in 1st, clutch in/off gas, shift, clutch out/on gas. It was one quick and fast motion. I never saw the need nor expense to powershift.

As for spin, it was really dependant on surface conditions and tires. On the street with W-rated rubber, it was usually a healthy bark on the 1-2 ("errrrrrt"). On the 15" sawblades and OEM RSAs, there was quite a bit more spin ('errrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrt"). On the track, it was hit or miss. Sometimes it was just a quick bark of the tire, other times the spin was so bad that the car would actually drift right, and other times the tires spun so bad that I thought the clutch was actually slipping. I think the cause of the excessive spinning was residual oil on the track.

I would bet that a 6MT 5.5 gen will spin more on the 1-2 than a modded NA 4th gen. The easiest fix is to get some good performance rubber. It really does make a big difference.

Speed shift, redline. Usually just a quick chirp when it goes into second, but I've done many, many runs when I didn't spin. At all.

well said my friend! i liked the way you explained your chirping through the sound effects...hehe...makes me understand a lil better...

okay with that said and done...i guess i'll be speed shifting the 1-2 when i head to the track this november....

If I am racing I don't let off the throttle, even going into second. I push in the clutch at about 7200 and in most cases the engine doesn't have enough time to blip my 7500 limiter before I am in the next gear. When the Tilton goes on that will probably change.

Don't you ever feel bad for your engine when you're shifting that high?

If I had a 500whp FI setup and could afford to granny shift I might consider it.

This is an interesting and informative thread. I'm curious how the shifting would be changed under a sprayed application with an RPM switch that cuts off at 6500. Of course the 1-2 shift wheel spinning would be a LOT worse with say...a 75 shot. Would a granny shift be more on par in this scenario I wonder?

I don't like the term granny shifting because to me it sounds like "shifting slow." I don't shift slow in my turbo car on the 1-2 shift even, and it has enough power to spin the tires until 100mph if I'm on street tires and I let it. I roll on the throttle and don't go WOT in 2nd, but I don't shift slow. You manipulate the throttle to limit your wheelspin such that you don't hurt your time. No one can tell you how to do it really, you have to get out there and try it again and again and see what gives you the best time.

Now that is about the best, unbiased, straight up explanation I have heard on traction control yet. Not just another 'revision' of what someone else has said.

Well put, Nealoc!!

This has alot to do with your tires. On the street I could power shift cuz the spinning of the tires into second would act as a clutch in a way. Tried that same thing at the track, and I got so much wheel hop that it felt like the motor was gonna jump out of the compartment. If your tires are too sticky at the track, i would try to avoid power shifting..

I thought of another idea for us to discuss...

How much damage does the driveline go through if you SPEED shift the 1-2? I know there are a few members on here, that are forced to granny shift in order to save the life of the driveline...whether it be the clutch, gears, axles....

It's really not that bad with light duty or OE clutches. But you tards running around with 6 and 4 puck clutches will get exactly what you're asking for.

This is how I shift when running someone and I'm NA.

I speedshift when I'm on the bottle. That was with a 75 shot. Didn't want to risk spraying into the rev limiter.

dude i like the other guy said it depends on ur power but i usually power shift by never letting off the gas and shifting as fast as humanly possible from 1st to 2nd. Its definitly the best way to shift on the track because there is no time wasted. Downfall to that is only that it will mess up ur tranny real quick.

we all know the best way to shift without losing any time at all, would be a power shift (no letting go of the gas)...but in reality, you have to consider wheelspin, wheelhop and a few other factors which will contribute to slower times...

doing a power shift and letting the tires clutch as opposed to quick shifting probly ends the same way cause something is clutching no matter how you look at it...although your tires might hate you afterwards.
