Went to PIR for NHRA late night drags for the first time. I went to woodburn two summers ago and ran a 15.4 the second run after I burnt my clutch out the first (21 second pass)

I had since replaced the clutch, tranny (supposed to be VLSD, long story short ended up being a open diff) and flywheel:

Specs of my car
95 se 5speed w tranny from unknown car. I swapped the tranny myself only to find out it wasn't fitting, mechanic had to order an open diff axle (i got the raxle in the garage unused still to this day).
Spec stage2 kevlar clutch w/lightweight option
AASCO flywheel 2 piece, really light.
Injen CAI
Passenger seat removed, rear seats removed, rear seat back metal support plate removed, trunk gutted (spare/tools/jack included)

this was pretty much the best run of the night. I had two other 15.0's and my first run was a 15.5 because I shut it down early thinking I hit the line already when I wasn't even close (haha..) My trap that run was 1 mph faster at 74mph than my 1/8th mph.

I was happy to finally hit 14's but not thrilled. All else equal, I'm a pretty good driver. A few things I would like to fix:
My wheels are 18" and although lightweight aren't great for 60' times. What's the smallest/lightest wheel that will clear a BBK? Specifically the 300zx with mattblehm kit and 12.6" '04 rotors?

My launch: haven't had much time to practice. The two times in two years I've been to the track, I launch at 2k but wheelspin is pretty bad I think a lot to do with my huge wheels and low pro tires. Plus I just need to practice. I need a track day that isn't so crowded.. 4 runs in 3.5 hours isn't great.

My knock sensor: I tested it today on a hunch and a suggestion, and it was showing resistance of 1100-1600 fluctuating. I had noticed the car had been really bogged down lately. I wonder if this is affecting my 60' times as well??
I ordered a new knock sensor off ebay for 72 bucks shipped. I just searched for 'nissan knock' and a guy had one for 68 + shipping ups or priority mail.

I'll install the new knock sensor and probably hit the track again May 27th when I had planned to.

Please any input is appreciated. I know this time isn't impressive or stellar, just thought I'd share.

Btw I held third that run, and it really was at the redline for a while. I would love to see what kind of improvement I'd see from smaller, lightweight wheels and a tall tire (a D/R would be nice )

heck i dont know what to say other than good job man ! nothing wrong with making a nice 14 second pass ! you ever heard of a knock sensor kicking the bucket but not throwing a code ? i need to check mine one of these days, never been changed since 1997 ?? anyways nice work, hit up dragtimes.com and represent !

Actually from what I read on here, the KS almost always eats it without throwing the cel. My question would be if the ECU will self-clear the code if the knock sensor is working fine one minute, then bring the code back up if not. I know mine is original since '95, so dead or not, it's time for replacement.

If you can pull a 2.15-2.20-ish 60' you'll be doing 14.50's-14.60's.

I'm fairly certain that the KS doesn't alert you that it's broken - at least of 4th and 5th gens. 6th gens might be different though.

Had mine replaced and it's a very, very noticeable difference.

Oh yeah. My trap speeds went from 97-99 to 103-105 consistantly after I changed the knock sensor and its harness (the harness is very important too). Feels like +25 HP and a whole bunch of torque.

Hmm. Is the harness a part you can pick up new? I don't know if mine is even bad. I tested the KS through the harness, so it didn't rule out the harness as being part of the fluctuation/high resistance. I suppose I can test again with the knew KS on, and that will eliminate the KS as a variable.. assuming the new KS works 100%..


-It's funny, I'm actually hoping now that my KS is fubar'd, because that would explain the boggy feeling, as well as perhaps greatly my 1/4 as a whole.

If I bought ANY maxima I would replace the KS and harness out of sheer f*cking peace of mind.

well i'm not going to replace it if it works fine. The knock sensor on the other hand, seems more likely to fail. The harness is just two wires with connectors on each end.

I have 98' Max QX- european version VQ30DE autom. and I have Y-pipe, Apexi cone and still running on 1/4=16.1.s. speed-86.8mph and my 60 feet=2.545.s.
I am astonished that its so slow. it should be faster.
By the way if you put y.pipe instead the OE y-pipe with pre cats, doesn't you loose the resistance that is needed for y-pipe for maximum power.?
