how are you shifting? Are you lifting the gas at all?

I've never tried that, and have always thought that was really tough on the car, but obviously your 3 cars seem to take it pretty well...I think we just found out part of Neal's secret to speed

whoa hold on a sec, i didn't do this in my turbo car. it IS hard on your trans, I wouldn't dare do it with a car that's got as much power as my turbo car did - I'd break transmissions weekly if i did. I granny shifted that car on the street and probably only went 80-90% on the track.

I'd only do it in NA cars because they don't have the power to break gears. I did it in my old 96 for the 2-3 and 3-4 upshift, I didn't do it on the 1-2 upshift because I felt it made for too much wheelspin. on slicks I did it on all 3 upshifts in the 1/4 mile though.

not sure if I'll do it in my turbo car once I have my big boy trans in there.

I really haven't found it necessary to fully power shift my car. If I'm on my game my shifts are fast enough my foot never comes up far/completely off the gas anyways, it's more like a "half power shift". And with the large (for a VQ30) PF TB you don't have to be all the way down to be at WOT/full manifold pressure either.

And don't anyone go by the shifting on that 12 second video I recently posted either, that was way slow shifting...

I know you have a True Value clutch on this car, what did you have on your old NA car? Would having a stage 2 clutch change your decision to power shift?

wow Neal....thats really impressive! great times!

i have tried shifting like you did to get that time. but everytime i go from 1-2 shift the stick stift won't go into second.....it like catches on something or just feels really hard to get into second....would a short throw shifter help this?

sounds like a 2nd gear synchronizer issue, a short throw shifter would make it even worse.

no idea what clutch was in my other one, probably the same sort of thing. I doubt I would have paid the difference to have an OEM clutch put in it. That was 6 years ago.

what clutch you have shouldn't really affect whether or not you no-lift shift unless it's unbelievably harsh.

What are you talking about? I told him to double clutch because his 2nd gear is going or is out.

Double clutch while drag racing?

He's talking about no-lift shifting while racing...to get the quickest shift/power transfer possible. You're talking about having him perform a maneuver that would be slower for drag racing that just regularly shifting. If 2nd gear wasn't engaging at all, and not just during a no lift shift, I would say he wouldn't be drag racing or driving hard period.

instead of double clutch, try no clutch.

Hey DandyMax, it would be cool to arrange a cross-border Maxima track day.
I think Nealoc and the other MI locals should cross the border and do some runs at St. Thomas. It's probably only a 2 1/2 hr drive from MI. Dayum, it's about 2 hrs even for me coming from Toronto.
Then we go to their track a couple of weeks after.
When I was a little punk we used to have the Ontario/Michigan Hockey Tournaments. We'd go there - they'd come here. Good times.

double clutching in drag racing....

i practiced a little more with the no lifting the gas pedal while shifting....doesn't seem to much faster or that effective but i am getting the hang of it.

what i need to practice is slipping the clutch from the start....i usually just drop the clutch. i have gotten 2.12 60' on street tires. Neal how excatly do you slip the clutch? when i slip it too much it doesn't like to stick from there on after.......??

I don't know how to describe it, I just do it by feel. It's like riding a bike, you can't tell someone how to do it they just have to try it themselves.
