How much did you guys spend just to buy your max, then how much money have you put in it to get it running, and modding it? Just curious. I ripped some lady off and bought it for $600, but about $2000 worth of work into it, not including system.

Around Seattle, you can get a 2nd Gen Maxima for $1700-2500 that looks good and runs good but is mostly stock. Maybe some aftermarket wheels and tint on it at the most...

1st Gens are very hard to find and vary in price a lot. I got my junker for $200, and that's fair price for what I got. :-D
I've seen some nice ones advertised for $600-1500 around here. The cheaper ones usually have miles in excess of 200,000 but still run good.

How much?

$300 for the '82 with an L28E 5spd. $350 for injectors that squirt out the correct side. $30 in tune up and oil change. $15 for the wire harness to plug in the CD player. $7.50 in primer and black spray paint for "the bars" on the hood and to black out the grille and headligt surrounds. $1.50 for superglue for misc. repairs. The roof tar for the holes in the roof came with my house. I expect the body shop will charge me around $2000 for the body work and paint (going by what the MG cost). No idea on the suspension rebuild or interior work?????

How Much?

Well guys I was raped! I had a 88 Grand Am when I moved to Ft. Lewis, Wa. Lost the transmission and had to buy my Max. Not blowing smoke up your a$$es, I didn't want it, rather had something newer, and better, but I needed some wheels. Paid 6000 (no typo) for it. But when he bought the car to me washed up, It became my "Little Nismo"! Had a severe fuel problem but Nissan had a recall for the injectors and fuel pump, so they were replaced for free! Added a Pioneer head uniw/ 6 disc CD changer,150.00, 600 watt Cantus amplifier bridged mono 200.00, Sony Explod 1200 watt sub (only one) 79.00 (was for 149.00, but the clerk phuced the price up! shhhh), 400 watt American Pro amplifier for the rear deck, 200.00, 150 watt Pioneer amplifier for the front, 75.00, Crossover(forgot the name)
to handle it right 49.00, pair of Infinity for the front for 79.00 and a pair of Radio Shack 6" woofers for the rear deck for heck I don't know anymore. Indiglo blue foot pedals ( manual transmission, guys) for about 40, neon blue florencent tubes 20.00, windshield washer lights (now totally illegal to have blue or red, so more wasted money) 30.00, hyper white headlight 59.00, and last, but definitly not least Eagle Alloy 17" 6 spoke satin rims on low profile
Z- rated tires 900.00. Add it up. ( and if you all think I joking, I WILL POST PICTURES HERE OCT. 10 2002 to keep confusion down between
you guys and me, and Bleach, you can give me a date and we'll meet at the B&I in Tacoma and I'll show you.......)
Oh almost forgot: Pioneer XM satelitte radio, 300.00, and the $hit is off the hook!

I paid $4000 in hard earned cash to my mother for my 1988 Nissan Maxima SE, white with tan interior. It was 70K miles at the time and in really good condition. How do I know? Well, damned, you buying it from family, plus I had to wash and wax the car almost every week. I got the car stock, and the modding didn't start until about three years ago.

Now it has a Kaminari bodykit ($1500-1700 with paint), 18" ACE rims sitting on Yoko AVS dbs ($2000), custom CAI ($45), custom sound system ($1200), direct port concealed NOS system, programable to 35-65hp shot($900), and a whole slew of customization that I love on my car.

And it runs like a sonuva be-atch, still smacks Civics, Accords, Neons, Maximas, and everything else I can think of right now.

Although, I still dream of turbo and manual transmission while I'm driving it...funny...

I believe our 87SE was around $18k new. Until I broke the engine in 2000 it had 222k miles. Also every year the repairs were less than paying a $250 car note each month. That is until the tranny died (180k miles) and the suspension needed to be replaced. Other than that it was way cheaper to drive this car than buy a newer one. Of the 13 years about 6 of them were just basic maintence stuff. THis car was very reliable to us, too bad when i broke the engine (high rpm use too long) I lost my se-r in the flood so the max went by-bye .

I don't think they were that much brand new, maybe im wrong, but i had the original bill of sale from my car and it was $10,495, or something right around there.

No, Nismo's right, they were around $18,000 brand new. I still have the original window sticker that came with my car.

I got my car in Feb. 2000, paid around $5000 for it, and it only had 60,000 miles on it at the time.

As far as work that I've done to the car: $250 Pacesetter cat-back exhaust, $400 wheels, $400 tires, $350 KYB struts on all 4 wheels, $100 Die Hard Gold battery, $100 alternator, $200 timing belt and tensioner replacement, $250 brake job on all 4 wheels with all new rotors, $100 MAF sensor, plus routine maintenance and up keep.

The car is still running strong at 115,000 miles, hopefully I'll get another 115K out of it. Even it only makes it to 200K, I would have driven it for 140,000 miles. For $5000 and a few replacement parts and maintenance, I'd say I got my money's worth.

It's an 86, it has 166,510 miles on it(two trips from Washington to Alabama), now that I can slap a turbo and other speed candy on it, I might invest a little more into it. I will first get a underdrive pulley......

I bought it June 2001 from this place called maple leaf motors. At first there was just two of us who had maximas here on Ft. Lewis (same yr models) then. Now I saw at least four more, three 85s and a kitted 86.

That has got to be the most stuff piled into a 2nd Gen that I have ever heard of, besides 88max2nv!

I would love to see it. Of course, right now my brown dented MaxiPoop mobile isn't ready for the road, so you'll just have to see my 280ZX.
I live just north of Tacoma, but I don't know what B&I is...

I'm wondering if I should... get the 84 maxima on the road and then just sell it as is with a dented hood and front fender, but in good running condition. Then spend more money and buy a 1st gen in really good shape. (if I can even find one) Now things are looking better financially, so I can probably do that. It may end up being a better choice in the long run, but a lot more hassle swapping cars around. It seems I'm always doing that, and all my wife wants is a decent looking car that has power and is and cheap! And all I want is something with an engine I can work on, like the L-series engine.

Re: How much you buy your max for?

Mine is stock for now, except for the poly sway bar bushings...

I paid $3k for mine at the end of '99. I had no real time to shop around, and all I knew was that I wanted a Max. I'd just thrown a rod in my small truck (which was too small, as we'd just had our first crumb cruncher). When I called around, I found a friend who knew someone with the wagon. They wanted 3k for it for the sole purpose to buy a new engine for their '92 4Runner.

The car had 180k miles on it, and other than sh1tty paint, and some carpet and seat stains, the car was in great shape. The guy I bought it from owned an import repair shop in Raleigh, NC. At his house, he had a 4 car garage, with two lifts, etc...cars, especially Maxima's, were his passion. He had 3 2nd Gen's, and after I bought the wagon, he replaced it with an 88 SE 5-sp.

Since I got it, the distributor went out (the thrust bearing was gone, allowing about 1'4" vertical play in the shaft), costing me $150 to replace (got a deal from the parts store manager, since he was also a Max fan, having owned a white 86 wagon, and currently owned a red 3rd gen.), all drive belts, front struts, CV shafts, outer tie-rod ends, ball-joints, control arm bushings for both sides, and front sway bar bushings (the poly ones actually were cheaper than buying the rubber Nissan ones from the dealer).

The things left that I need to fix are :

Engine leak, complete P/S replacement (pump, rack and all hoses), rebuild all four calipers, and replace all four rotors, exhaust, replace the driver side fr. seat belt, the blower motor, the A/C-Heater control switch, and get an actual glass sunroof panel from a wagon. I had to replace the panel once, and the only one available then was from a sedan, and the local Nissan dealership swore they were the same - they were wrong.

How much you buy your max for?

I bought mine from my little brothers for $300 at around 180,000 miles. One thousand miles later, my engine through a rod through the oil pan. I was originally supposed to buy the car for $800, but they said $300 was fine, they just wanted to get rid of it. It seemed like when they had it, they replaced just about everything.... yeah, right. The problems just keep on coming. Since I've owned it (almost 1 year now) I've had the engine replaced and a new pipe about a foot long to the muffler replaced, and I replaced all four brake pads, the front struts, lower ball joints and tie-rod ends. Minor things that need replaced, still on my shopping list, are things like the power mirrow switch that is popping out of my dash and my master window control switches that do not want to roll down the rear windows unless you press the buttons as hard as you can and the voice-activated "lights are on", "key is in the ignition" button that says on/off, but doesn't turn off. Or the "loud" button on the radio that can't stay down. Or the radio that only plays out of the passenger side speakers when the radio is playing, but plays out of driver and pass. speakers when I have my adaptable CD player attachment.

Re: How much you buy your max for?

My Dad's co-worker had this '87 Max and was doing the brakes on it. He said that he broke 3 C-clamps trying to press the rear calipers back in. So, he decided to get rid of it. Since my Dad worked with the guy, all he wanted for it was $20 for the cost of the new brake pads that where just purchased. My dad threw him $120 bucks, took the Max home and screwed the calipers in (rear calipers have to be rotated to be pressed back in, not just pressed) and everything was fine. At the time, I was driving a 87' Ford Aerostar van. I messed up the engine pushing it between 80 and 85 mph on the highway, lost oil pressure, loud knocking, got rid of the van and took my Dad's 87 Max. This car is pretty sweet. Currently it has 220,000+ miles on it. I drive it 90 mph for 50 miles to work everyday. I drive between Chicago and Detroit at least once a month. I put many, many miles on this car, and it keeps on going. At higher rpm's it runs beautifully, but I need to fix a problem (it chugs during acceleration). Nice car, nice price.
