intake airflow temperature sensor

well, i bought some resistors from radio shack in hopes of advancing the timing in my car (its a 1987), but on what i think is the IAT sensor, there are 4 (or mabee 5) wires in the harness connected to it! no one has ever given good instructions on how to do this, on the internet at least, and i was hoping one of you have done this before. would i just be able to unplud stuff from the ECU & put the resistor directly in the ECU?

if you know how to do this on a 2nd gen, please give me some detailed instructions, cuz i dont wanna just go plugging wires into my ecu & guessing... thanks
