Why do the `88 Automatic transaxles suck so bad?

Today's a sad day. I get my `88 SE towed home for the last time. It's already happened 3 times over the past 5 years.

The first time was at 168,000 miles. $2500 tranny.

The second time was at 200,000 miles - a 100 mile tow from another state. $2500 tranny.

The third time was at 220,000 miles. $1300 used tranny.

Now the car has 235,000 miles and I'm tired of changing trannys more than brake pads.

So today's a sad day because I'm towing the car for the 4th time and will have to just eat my loss. Anyone need a parts car?

I wish I lived closer to you. I'd buy it...but you're too far away...

If you decide to part it out, let me know...there are some parts I'm looking for...

same here. let me know cos I could use some parts. finding them in a junkyard is difficult cos I live in redneck country where people don't believe in imports. but they're better, I tell ya!

I, to, am saddened by your loss. It's always disturbing to see one of these old Nissan cars being towed to the "Nissan resting grounds". For in there lies my '89 Sentra that I wrecked in August of last year because of a stop sign covered by a tree. Waste of a good car, and nothing ever went wrong with that thing.....ever. I even went so far as to hold a funeral ceremony at the wrecking site. I parted it out, salvaging everything and anything I could...seats, center console, headlights, taillights, even the trunk lid....and then I accepted the loss and moved on. but I WILL own another one of those cars!! After 2 piece of junk cars (VW Fox and chevy cavalier) I got the Maxima and (thumbs crossed) have never had any major problems with it. Still running strong with 174,000 miles. Good luck!!

I am saddened by your loss as well. After reading your post, and wiping the tear from my eye, I realized that we have quite a lot in common. I too had an `89 Sentra that died due to a floppy timing chain that eventually beat the hell out of some things in there. I had 245,000 miles on it. That was actually my Son's car that I bought for him. My wife suggested that I sell (give) him my `90 Maxima. I was appolled that she even suggested such a thing. The more I thought about it, the more it made sense. I was saddened as well, as this reality set in.

I told her that I would have to get what I want if I agreed to this.
The blow was softened when I picked up my `99 Trans Am....LOL.

You must have a manual transmission. I just spoke with a mechanic friend of mine who said that the problems with these automatics is that the filter is internal to the transmission and isn't changed with the normal fluid change. How crazy is that?....leaving the crap and small metal shavings in there...?

Anyways, good luck with your Maxima. They will go forever. Oh, and BTW the wife has a 2001 SE so we still have one left in the family. The `90 was totalled last year 1 week after putting a couple of grand into it. It was a PERFECT car with the high mileage that it had.

If you have the grey interior, I will buy everything from you. Of course, I need the SE package.
