Oil Pressure Sending Unit

Oil Pressure Sending Unit
My oil pressure gauge stopped working and I traced it down to a broken wire coming off the oil pressure sending unit. I took the end from the connector and touched it to the battery and the needle swung all the way over, so that must be all it is. I think maybe I broke it when I tried removing the oil filter, which seems to be a science with these cars. anyway, my question is... I know where the sending unit is, but I need to know if there are any special techniques to removing it. it looks like the exhaust might be in the way. do I need to drain the oil first? there's a shop near me that says they "specialize in nissans" and to have it done would run about $46. Would it be worth my time to do it myself or have it done professionally? the job seems easy enough. it's kind of a priority, I like knowing if the oil pressure is low.... thanks.

Re: Oil Pressure Sending Unit
Hope you didn't touch that wire from the oil pressure gauge to the +12 on the battery, that could have burn it out. The correct and safe way is to "ground" that wire to check the gauge. Key in the on position.
Are you saying the shop will replace your old unit with a new one for $46, did the terminal break off, if so, let them do it.
If its still good and all you need to do is repair the wire, do it yourself , get your hands dirty.
I had to repair the wire on my 86SE, really bad place for that wire being near the exhaust. The insulation on the wire was all cracked and harden. All I had to do was use a bullet terminal to fix it. You may have to get under the car to really see what your doing.
Good Luck,
Al

Nah, it's broken off at the sending unit. There's not enough wire on the unit to get a good splice. I think I broke it months ago, or at least wiggled it loose, trying to loosen/remove the oil filter, which is next to impossible.
