I am by no means the expert.......but have replaced the following on my 85 with over 250K miles...
1. Air regulator (see sticky to modify)
2. CHTS
3. Mass Air Flow Sensor

If it was me....I was to look first I would look at the Air Regulator first!!!

That sounds tricky enough. You can usually get a 1984 Nissan Maxima service manual on ebay. When is the last time you replaced your fuel
filter? I usually start with the least expensive options when I don't know what's causeing the problem.

My 84 Maxima was sitting in a garage for a few years until I recently brought it out. When I started it up it would run for a few seconds and then quit.
I eventually disconnected the battery, and took a look at the fuel pump which is outside the gas tank. It had rust on the electrical connections. I removed the fuel pump, cleaned the connections, reinstalled the fuel pump and it started right up and kept running.

you say the fuel pump runs when you turn the key? do you mean the car runs, or the fuel pump? .. can you hear the pump?

for that specific problem you should try and ask in the 5th gen forums, but only once you have done 15 WORTHWHILE RESPONSES in other ppls threads. Don't just postwhore to get to 15, you can get banned for that. Good luck fixing your problem

85 Maxima fuel pump problem

So the car dies. We let it sit for a year cause it's my mom in law's and she got to feeble to drive. Now son is 16 and want him to drive it.

Years ago, it engine would turn over but not fire. Open the hood, bang on the relays that were clicking and clicking would stop, engine would fire up and run. Replaced relay. Then stop cranking. We let it sit.

Now I put a new battery in and WA LA! Fires right up! Drove to the local gas station, fill er up, and back home. Then, no start. Fuel pump works well when hot wired. But absolutely won't pump gas when starter turning.

Just bought a good running 87 sedan for $300 (with slipping tranny- blackened fluid) so have a wealth of parts.

I've replaced all the relays and fuel pump fuse. But no fuel pumping.

Any ideas?

BTW, we are trying to get the Wagon on the road. Sedan is donor car.
