Adjust Idle Speed

I recently replaced the air flow meter on my '88 maxima, and now it idles really high, approx. 1200 RPM. I've looked in the manual and online but can't seem to find where to adjust the idle speed. Is a simple screw adjustment, or do I have to do something with the ECU?

Look on the back of the intake collector on the passenger side. The bigger screw is the idle adjust. ALso you have to unplug the connector to the soleniod to properly adjust the base idle.

So all you have to do is take off the plug and turn the big screw? Ive been trying to set it with the plug on and it changes up and down but later on it will rev at whatever it feels like, sometimes 1000 sometimes 1300 it just does whatever the hell it wants. If i take the plug off and try to adjust it do you think that will solve the prob?

There's a specific way to adjust the idle, you're going to have to consult a repair manual in order to do it properly. It consists of unplugging that connector, reving the engine, shifting through the gears, waiting for a certain period of time, etc, etc...

Just get a Haynes or Chiltons manual and you'll be fine, it's really easy. Besides, if you plan on keeping your car for a while, the repair manual will be invaluable, trust me.

I checked in my Haynes manual and it didn't say anything about a procedure to adjust idle. Do you turn it clockwise to raise, or lower idle. Also, do you have to have the engine running at the time?

Its in the Chilton Manual, you want to get that one.
