Reverse won't work - 87 5sp Maxima

Hi everyone.

My dad's 87 5sp SE won't go into reverse. Does this problem ring any bells with everyone else???

Thanks.

Can you be a bit more specific when you say won't work....can you shift in reverse and nothing happens, or will it not shift into reverse at all? It be easier to diagnose your problem.

OK-
first there is a lot of free play on the clutch pedal, almost seems as if it needs to be bled.
Next - the car can shift into 1st through 5th, but you simply can't find reverse.

Any ideas?

Have you tried nudging the car when going into reverse? Also, you might consider checking the clutch out....though if there was something wrong with it, you would have problems shifting all together. The other possiblity is you have a mess up idler assembly in the tranny, or possibly a bent fork.

Are you able to shift from 1st straight into reverse? Sometimes this is required on some 5-speeds after they reach a certain milage, to reset the reverse lock-out mechanism. It should go into rev. from neutral, but when this goes out, sometimes you can override it with the method above.
