Cone filter replacing stock filter

I had hoped to help my 87 Max breathe a little easier to coax a few more ponies out of it. I have a cone filter with an adaptor plate. Looks like the stock airbox has to come off/out and the adaptor plate will bolt onto the MAF..then the filter onto the adaptor. Ok, this does not look too hard - however there is a 3/4" hose that comes from the AIV ?? and hooks onto the air filter box about an inch from where the MAF connects into the air filter box. I see that the opening into the airbox (where this hose is) looks sooty. In going to the cone filter I am not sure of what is to happen with this hose which I think is from the AIV. It also looks like there has been water in the bottom of the stock airbox. As far as I know my MAF is working.

I'd appreciate anyone's helpful feedback. What I can say to this point is that people have been really helpful (and patient) with my questions. I thank you for that.

Well, it's good that you disconnected it. I would leave that hose disconnected if I were you. Also for a precautionary measure, I would go in and check your ECU for codes, just in case the MAF is having problems or not. Though the first noteable problem is the MAF is bad is the engine will not rev past 2000rpm. If you want it to maintain a clean look, you can slap a breather filter on the AIV hose, but it seems kinda pointless if the AIV isn't working correctly.

I'd disconnect that hose from the AIV, then get a really long one and connect it to the AIV and route it to the bottom of the engine. The AIV tends to put out an exhaust smell that can enter the passenger compartment, not too noticible but it's there nevertheless.

The AIV does absolutely squat and won't effect the way your car runs or your emissions testing.
