Had an accident, totaled?

Well I got rear ended, didn't think it was bad, but I was suprised when I looked at it. Passenger side rear quater panel crumpled, and the wheel rubs on it a little. The rear passenger side door won't close, and the left one is jammed shut, trunk is jammed too. Tried to open it didn't wanna go, but don't wanna put much force on it since, it'll be a biatch to close it probably. The right taillight is pushed in a bit. Well I took some crappy pics with the photo mode in the camcorder. I'm wondering if it'll be totalled, and I'm guessing it probably will.

Anyone know how much the estimate might be? The other guys insurance company said that the adjuster will call within 2 days. The car just rolled to 97k, I was expecting many more miles from it, oh well.

Thanks

Well, it's only going to be totaled if you carry collision on it, which I'm guessing you do. I don't have collision on my '88, so if it's seriously wrecked, I'm buying a new car.

Anyway, my guess is that it will be totaled since I'm sure it'll cost more to fix it than the car is worth. If you hit in the front, it wouldn't be so bad since you can replace the front fenders, but there's not much they can do with the rear quarter panels.

If you have a high deductible and don't get a lot of money for the car, you might be better off keeping it and trying to fix it up. You'll definitely have to replace the bumper cover and probably the bumper itself. I'd try to get that right side door closed and then just weld it shut.

I know that's a pretty ghetto way of fixing up a car, but that's probably the cheapest way to go.

Well, what you can do is make the guy's insurance pay for repairing it. Don't settle or sign anything until they give you what you want. I know I would do that. Anyway, sucks to hear that happened, but maybe you might make it out....just don't settle for totalled. :P

Judging from the pics, it is totaled. Not only the rear panels are damaged, it is pushed up to the rear wheels. If they were sectioned panels, then you might would be able to fix it. However, they are seamless from the panel to the roof of the car. Now, there are body shops that can fix those panels, but it is going to cost you.

I'm a field appraiser and I can tell you without question it is totalled. My educated guess (using used parts) would be $4800.00 to repair....time to find a new car!

Slider,

If your car is considered totaled are you going to try to part it out?

Thanks, but if it's $4800 it's definately totalled, a lot more damage then the car is worth. I'm just hoping they give me a decent amount for it. It's kinda akward and weird since it was my friend in the other car, he has american family insurance, don't know how good they are.

Don't have collision, his insurance should cover it. I'll update you guys, adjuster should call within 2 days.

Nope sorry, don't really have room for it, would be too much of a hassle.

It was kinda akward but he was cool about it. Nothing else there could've been done. I just hope it doesn't mess up his insurance rates badly. Don't think there will be any hard feelings.

American Family is ok...I have NADA eValuator and it came up at $2450.00 for high retail (dealer front line condition) with 97k miles. If it's just in avg condition expect to see an offer of 1200-1500 for it...you can probably fight for more PLUS a rental till you get paid.

Well, if the insurance company totals it, then they're going to take the car from you, probably selling it to a scrapyard. If that's the route you're planning on taking, I'd rip as much off of it as I could, that way you can make some extra cash in addition to the insurance money you'll get.

But like I said, I don't think you'll get much, probably no more than $1500. You may want to consider patching it up, although it'll look like sh*t, you could get another 100K miles out of it. Also, you won't strain your friendship either. Even though the insurance company will pay for your car, your buddy's insurance premiums are going to go through the roof, especially if he's young.

Actually if anything is missing from the vehicle when it's salvaged they will try and deduct used replacement cost for each item off your settlement..I wouldn't advise doing that. A better idea is to find a temp home for it and tell the adjuster you wish to "retain salvage"...they will only deduct about $50.00 (salvage value) from your settlement that way...then you could sell it as a non-rebuildable parts car, probably within days judging by the folks in here....

Im glad youre alright. I remember when I was in an accident with my car the insurance company totalled it. I didnt want that to happen so my dad paid for the fixes totalled 2500 to fix. More than what we paid for it. They did a terrific job and you cant even tell it was in that accident. I dont have pics of the accident though it was kinda nasty. Got hit in the front right passsenger side. Quarter of the fender bent back, no more clearance light it was just dangling all mangled, right headlight pushed in diagonally, hood was pushed up but no damage done to it, right portion of the bumper showed the protective foam stuff in there, and my right tire was pushed back just a tad so it rubbed the fender well when I would turn to the right. They pulled everything back into specs, people dont even know it was in an accident. Glad to here everything is fine though. Sop what are you going to do now? What next car do you have in mind?

I bought the car for $2000 a little more than half a year ago. My dad wants me to get them to pay $2000. I really don't have a job right now, this car was bought with my parents money, just use it to get to places, my mom doesn't drive. Don't know what I'm gonna get if it's totalled. My parents want me to get something that eats less gas. Something was probably messed up with the Maxima because it was getting around 10mpg. Was gonna check it out when it was warmer during the weekend. I'm not sure what price range cars I'm looking at, maybe no car at all. It's all up to my parents. I'm just waiting for the insurance to call, stuck at home. I was thinking a 240sx, but I recently got intrested in the late 80's Saab 9000 Turbos, saab autos aren't the greatest so it would definately have a manual. We'll see how much money the insurance offers, right now I don't know what price I'm looking at so I don't know what to look for. Money is a little tight, looking for a job right now. So I'm not really sure about the future car.

Well the adjuster just called as I was typying this post, and we setup a date that they'll come and write an estimate for the car. She said that she's afraid that there's a high possibility it will be totalled so I should get my valuables out of it and told me to call her back when it's out there. I'll put some tape on the door so water doesn't get in there, put it out on the street tommorow and call her. They said if it's totalled they'll take it to a salvage yard. Well I guess this it, they work from 8am-5pm, so when I come back from school (will be home prolly 2:30) on monday it might not be there anymore. I feel like going for a drive.

Not sure if I should keep the plates on it, since it'll probably totalled and they'll take it. But I don't wanna get a ticket if I leave it out there. Can I put the plates on my next car and register them on it, would it be cheaper? I just hope I'm home when they come. Maybe I should take a day off of school.

Thanks for all the help guys.

-Mike

edit: drove the car, I think there's an exhaust leak somewhere not gonna drive it anymore after this, smells awful. The fuel tank also looks like it dropped, and one side of it is resting across that metal bar under the car that is connected to both rear wheels, forgot what it's called. Opened the trunk and it looks like it's bend in the middle of it on the bottom. Definately totalled.. :/

Totalled

Well they called yesterday but I wasn't home. So I pick up today and the guy tells me I have two options let them total the car and give me $2046 or let me keep the car and give me $1646. I chose the first option, so they will be towing the car tommorow or friday. I was suprised at the offer I though it would be lower so I agreed to it. Did some farewell burnouts in the rain, but I'll probably drive it tommorow since it's supposed to be raining pretty bad.

The whole car buying process all over again is gonna be a pain, but these things happen.

It was fun while it lasted, I'll still pop in and check on the turbo maxes. Thanks for everything everyone, this site owns, it has some great info and people.

Later,
Mike
