i want to recharge the freon r12 in my '91 maxima se (a have a bunch of the "Banned" cans do i just put the freon in or do i also have to put in compressor oil how do i know if i need the oil?

Quite honestly, you might want to have an A/C tech do it. It's real easy to goof up the A/C system if you don't have experience. Since you can provide the R12, you should be set.

You would need gauges to tell you how much freon you're
putting in (over charging the system can cause problems
as well).
I've done my own A/C repairs in the past, but only after
having the system evacuated by a shop, then I had the same
shop refill the system after the repair.
After the repair, the shop would run a vacuum test to see
if the system had any leaks, then fill the system.
The shop was pretty cool about it, charged me a nominal fee
and didn't charge me for the freon they evacuated from the
system before the repair.
As far as the oil goes, you really only need a little, if
you add too much, you don't leave much room for the freon
which will hurt the cooling capabilities of the system.
