How much of the 91 motor would you be using?

The 91 lonblock (block + heads) is the same engine
that's in the 86.

The fuel injection is different though.

The trannies are different, but the 91 should bolt
right up the 86 being the same long block.

What's wrong with your engine that you want to do a
swap?

If you're looking for more power, I doubt that you
will find it just by doing an engine swap.

If you move the 91's injection over as well, you'll
have quite a bit of fabrications to make to both the
hardware and wiring parts of your car... most likely
not worth it.

Hope this helps...

Umm...the auto trannies are different, but if your using the manual, they are essentially the same. As for the the rest of the engine, intake manifold is different, there block casting is slightly different (though it not going to affect anything), and wiring is different. Also the 3rd gen's have a y-pipe, the 2nd gens do not, they have a crossover pipe instead for the exhaust. You can do the swap, I would recommend keeping as much of the third gen motor as you can, (especially the wiring harness, and the ECU). There shouldn't be much fabrication needed, if any.

I am doing the swap because my timing belt broke and screwed my motor.
I have not yet bought the motor, wanted to know if it would work first.
I plan on using my fuel inj.
He wants 450 for the motor, is that a good price for it?
It has low miles.
Thank you for your replies.

Is the engine still in the 91? If so, is the 91 too
far gone to just buy the whole car, fix whatever, and
drive it?

$450 doen't sound bad to me... I saw one go for $800
off of Ebay, plus that guy had to pay shipping as well.

Price isn't too shabby, just check out the motor throughly. Check the history of the motor, and the history of the car.

That depends on wether it is from an SE or a GXE. If it's the SE, no, it won't...that's the VE30DE... the DOHC model...and it will not physically fit in our cars.

What's wrong with the car that he's parting it out?

It still comes down to if it's an SE of a GXE.

The SE came with either trans, and the VE30DE in that car will not fit.

The GXE car only came equipped with an auto...but it uses the slightly revamped VG30E like in our cars.

Another way to find out, is to ask if it has 4 wheel disc brakes...on the 3rd gen cars, only the SE's came equipped with 4 wheel discs. However, note that some SE's did come with drums in the rear...

They easiest way to tell is to ask if the engine has or uses a distributor. The VE30DE uses a distributorless ignition system. Also, if the vanity cover plate on the intake manifold says "DOHC" anywhere on it, it won't fit, it's the VE30DE.

It is a single ohc motor. So there is no diff between auto and maNUAL tranny in these motors.

The only difference should be the ECU. But you're going to have to use the ECU that comes with that car anyway, plus all of the wiring as well. If that car is a stick and you're putting it into an automatic (or vice versa), then you're going to have to get an ECU from a '94 with the transmission that you currently have. Hell, I don't even know if any of that would work because the automatics in the 3rd gens are computer controlled.

I'd strongly recommend against doing it, it would be such a pain in the *** to do and isn't worth it for a 17 year old car, especially since you're not going to get any performance benefits from doing it. You may have to pay a few extra bucks to get a motor from an '85-88, but at least you'd only have to drop it in, you wouldn't have to deal with all of the issues of retrofitting, and I'm sure there are plenty.
