PCV Valve (part II) and hose

fun fun.... last night I removed my PCV valve. in the process, the solid hose leading from it to the rear cylinder head broke. I looked at it more closely and it appears to have been cracked/dryrotted before this happened.

the question again.... could this cause my idling problem?

(2) is there supposed to be motor oil on the pcv valve? there was on mine.

working with what I had at the time, I managed to glue the hose back together temporarily (cos the car wouldn't start) with ATV silicone sealant and tightly wrap it with electrical tape. when I started the car back up, it still gives me the 1500 RPM idle.

will any parts store carry a new hose? I'll see how the car runs with a new hose and pcv valve. the car goes in on tuesday to have the idle problem looked at, cos it sucks gas down like a two-dollar *****.

No, I don't think the PCV valve will effect your idle. If it does, it wouldn't make it jump to 1500 rpm.

I disconnected the hose from the PCV valve in order to test it, which is the proper procedure. I didn't notice any difference in engine operation when I plugged up the PCV valve.

As for motor oil on the valve, you're supposed to put some on the threads before you install it, but there shouldn't be motor oil inside the valve itself.

Since the PCV valve is is over the valve cover, it will get a little bit of oil on it, but there shouldn't be an oil in it (there is a baffle there to prevent that). As for your idle, it shouldn't effected it.

I just went through something with my 87 that may or may not be similar to what is causing your high idle. After replacing the engine, I forgot to connect the vacuum hose that supplies air to the air regulator, FICD and idle speed control. I had such a big vacuum leak, that the car wouldn't idle. I ended up adjusting the mechanical stop on the throttle body to raise the idle speed. When I finally found the hose disconnected and connected it, my idle speed went to about 1500 RPM. I then had to turn the mechanical stop back down to get the idle speed in the right range.

Maybe, somewhere down the line, someone adjusted the stop to compensate for some vacuum leak, and you repaired it causing your idle speed to be too high. I had a spare throttle body and the stop screw still had a stripe of paint on it, they must adjust it during manufacture since there is no mention of it in the FSM. I reset the one on the car to about the same height (about .070") above the boss the screw goes through and now my idle speed is normal again.

Just something you can look into if your idle speed is still too high.

One more idea. Make sure your throttle is actually resting on the stop wherever it may be adjusted to. It's possible the cable could be adjusted wrong keeping the throttle from closing completely. I had that problem when i first hooked up the throttle cable after installing a replacement engine. You don't want any preload on the throttle cable. It should be just slightly slack.
