A fine choice indeed.
I have an '88 maxima that I've had a little over a year now, with just over 180,000 miles on it. I'm glad I got it. it's the best car I ever owned, the next in line was an 89 Sentra I wrecked when I was 18. I guess it's kinda a Nissan thing, cos I beat the hell out of that damn sentra and couldn't kill it. I drove the damn thing through a creek and it made it through and drove off with no problems. of course, I've settled down with
my driving - a bit, I guess, I still like to show some little 4-cylinder honda civic that maximas are better off the line. Take care of it, it'll take care of you.
as for mods, I hear there are a bunch of things you can do, I'm 2 years outta high school and not exactly making the salary of my dreams, so I'm putting off mods until I am. so far the only money I sank into it was stuff it needed (clutch, timing belt, hub assembly.....) these cars do have a kick to them though, at least mine does, but it's a 5-speed manual, I never drove an automatic maxima.
I'm not sure about door handles, it depends on what kind you want. if you just need a replacement, you might be able to find some at a junk yard. if you're looking for something better, I dunno what to tell ya. stuff like that seems to be very hard to find for our 2nd gens. most of the catalogs I look through start with 89-up with the 3rd gen body style.
I'm sure you'll get bombarded with responses to what you can do for performance mods.

Werd, another 86! I don't feel so lonely! I myself have an SE 5-speed. Great car. Anyways, I've done a few performance mods on my car, cone intake, 2.25" exhaust from the cat-back, 3rd gen 5-speed, and right now I'm working on the handling. I'm in the process of lowering the car 1.5", and upgradeing the struts. Either way, my car does pretty well. Not the greatest, but it holds up well against a lot of cars. Good luck with your car.

Check out the 2nd gen Maxima club, the link is in my sig. There's tons of pictures of 2nd gens, so that could get you started with some ideas. There's also a links section that has a link to about everyone that sells stuff for our cars.
As for door handles, if you have the keyless entry pad and you want to keep it, then you'll have to get the same kind of door handles. Unfortunately, the only handles that have the keyless entry pad are all chrome because it was only offered for the GXE / GL trim. If you don't have it or don't want to use it anymore, you could get painted ones that come with the SEs. The best place to check for new door handles is at a junkyard. http://www.car-part.com has a database of junkyards, so you could find one there and call the junkyard up and have them ship them to you.
I don't know if you can paint the chrome ones or not, I suppose it is possible if you sand them down, I'm not a body shop expert so I don't really know.

No, it doesn't cost extra, they make installation kits that fill that wide opening. The only thing is I don't think you can put a double din radio in there unless you make a custom piece for it. I'm pretty sure the installation kits are only set up for single din radios.
I got a double din unit in my car, but that's because the '87-88's didn't have that really wide radio that you '85-86ers got. The double din unit fits in perfectly and no installation kit was needed. It's cool cause it looks stock and even has a silver color to match the climate controls.

I got the Pioneer FH-P4000. It retailed for $550 when new, but I got it off of Ebay for about $200. Here's a link to it: http://www.pioneerelectronics.com/Pi...9,2238,00.html
Pioneer has discontinued that model though, but they do have an updated version, the FH-P4100. It's identical in function to the one that I got, they just changed the look of it. However, I actually prefer the look of the older one. It retails for $500, but I've seen them on Ebay for a lot less than that.
