How can you tell what model Maxima you have if...

I assume you're referring to the trim level. I know we answered this a few times before, so you may want to use the search feature or check the stickies.
Anyway, if you have chrome trim, a chrome grill, chrome door handles, and body colored mirrors, then you have a GL if it's an 85/86 or a GXE if it's an 87/88.
If you have black trim, a black grill, body colored door handles, black mirrors, cutout headrests, a front air dam and a trunk lid spoiler, then you have an SE, regardless of production year.
There are some other minor differences and there were different options depending on which trim you got. For example, if you had the GL/GXE, you could get a digital dashboard, automatic climate control, and a keypad entry. You couldn't get those options on the SE. However, you could get the electronically adjustable suspension on the SE, which you couldn't get on the GXE.
The GL/GXE is the luxury trim whereas the SE is the sports trim. However, Nissan has changed what the trim levels mean since then. For the 4th and 5th gens, the GXE was the base trim, the GLE was the luxury trim, and the SE was still the sports trim. The 6th gen has went back to the luxury and sport trims only, with the SL being the luxury trim and the SE still remaining as the sports trim.

One note...85 SE's did not have an air dam, all 86 SE's came with a air dam, and 87-88 SE's had an option for an air dam. Also all 85-86 SE's came only with 5-speeds, and 87-88 SE's had an optional automatic.

Those were all 88's. They had 2 names....SE-L (for SE Limited) or Shiro Edition. They came with white paint and white trim, clear turn signals, white wheels, Suade interior and Shiro Edition badging.

What if a guy that owned the car hit a tree not that hard but enough to screw up the front a bit, drove away, got some junkyard parts put it on. The accident is never reported, carfax says it's clean. Don't rely on carfax for everything, personal inspection is better.

I browsed the sticky thread..
and some of the websites, but I didnt see anything about what trim levels had the electronic adjustable seats, 'emergency' seat belts, or the voice that tells you your fluids are low.
And is the trimming interchangeable? I'd love to see what white mirrors would look like on my SE. Probably crap since I have the black trim all around (except my front grill, headlights and side lights that I replaced with salvage yard parts), but I have yet to be able to find ones in good condition or with the mirror still on them.

Pretty much all maxima's, except for floaters had voice warning systems that told you many many things.....and tends to be very annoying when your working on the car, with the engine off, key in the ignition and the drivers door open. :P
I believe in 85-86 only GL's got the power slide seats, and SE's had manual adjusted seats. In 87, all maxima's had power slide seats, and I believe they all got passive seatbelts etc.
