Timing
Timing
In my quest to get my car running how it should, I have a question about proper timing procedures for 87' Nissan Maxima. Is it completely necessary to rev your engine up to 3000RPM 3 times before timing? Does that perhaps tell the computer that it's time to behave for timing?
Also If you CHTS is not working, is the default setting from the computer that the engine is COLD or HOT?

The revving of the motor is to assure the engine is in proper idle when you start adjusting the timing. In a sense, what you said is what happens.
Also if the CHTS is bad, most likely the motor would run in a closed loop, which is what it does when it's cold.

So the resistance inversly porportionate to the temperature on the CHTS correct? (eg. 176*F is .30-.33 resistance and 67*F is 2.5) And is the ECU constantly reading the CHTS? Because I tried some resistors in the plug and they would only work sometimes and not others.
I see you had a question about what temp the computer uses if the CHTS is bad.
I had a problem with my CHTS a while back and the information I found indicated that if the sensor was not working the computer would use a cold setting to start but switch to a hot setting when running. That’s why some people with a bad CHTS have performance problems until the engine reaches the temp that the computer is using…hot setting… Once the engine warms up you usually will not have a problem.
