82 Diesel Max tranny Q's

I have an 82 with the ld28. I only dont like the 3 speed automatic and am changing it out for a 280ZX 5 speed. The LD28 and L28 (240,260,&280) are essentiall the same, excepting that the LD is diesel...so the block is the same. However in this process, if someone has any pics of how the 5 speed in the diesel is set up, installed, ect, it would be much appreciated.

Also, if anone has any questions, I have some answers as I have an interest in 1st gen maxes

I've converted my old 510 from auto to 5-sp. Same style L series blocks and same style rwd tranny. It really shouldn't be a big deal. MECHANICALLY, it should all switch over fine. But you will need to add the 5-sp master cylinder/lines, probably need the 5-sp brake pedal(smaller), and of course the 5-sp. If the tranny lengths are the same, the driveshaft should be the same also. The only thing will be some of the auto's lockout electronics. I'd get under the car and see if you can figure out how to jump these lockouts before trying the swap. It shouldn't be hard at all.

dude, you are my new best friend! I know I need to run the MC lines, the question is how? I have the trans, pedals MC out of a 80 280ZX, and the flywheel, and clutch set I am getting new from shucks. I pulled the trans out of the passenger seat after someone took the exhaust and pulled it for me

I assume you run the mc lines like you would on an oem manual. Yes, you also need the manual flywheel. But I don't recommend a shucks clutch. At least get a quality aftermarket that sells the same oem brand as Nissan. ie.. Nissan uses Daikan as their oem disc/pp maker. Some Japanese only parts places can get a Daiken for you. You will also need to put in pilot shaft bearing inside the crank as the autos don't have one. It's a small brass bushing. I don't know if you need to pull whatever the auto versions have there. If I can remember anything else, I'll let you know. You should also have a few diff trannies to chose from ie.. 240z/260z/280z/280zx/280zx turbo

so the Perfection Hytest isnt what I want. poo. What do the OEM sets run? Is the pilot shaft bearing the same as the throwout bearing?

I have no idea what clutch that is. OEM will probably be $200-ish for the disc/pp and throw out bearing. Throw out bearing attaches to the shift fork. The pilot shaft bearing in inserted into the end of the crank and supports the main shaft of the transmission.

Aaah. You have been very helpful. What year is your max? I am very interested
Also, I just looked at her and the MC lines look quite similar to the 280ZX we got the parts from, so it looks easier than I thought. Also, the firewall has a plug to be removed for the MC, so no cutting!

here are alot of pics of my 1992 se. Someone totalled my old one and I got almost an exact copy. There are two pages on each section.

I grew up on Datsuns so I know a little about the L-series stuff. My brother had a lowered 810 with 15" ronals but it got stolen! Had a factory rebuilt L24 in it.

Jeff. I just clicked on the link to go see your car and I see you have a CD player in your dash. I bought a CD player for my 1982, but I'm in dire need of a wiring harness to make the installation much easier. Did you use a wiring harness or did you hook it up the hard way? And if you did use a wiring harness, can you tell me where I can get one for my car? Thanks and I appreciate your help.

I have to apologize, I bought the car that way. But I can pretty much say that the previous owner ran all new wires from what I can see. There's an amp under the Pass side seat and X-overs under the D-side.

The glow plugs have no effect on milage at all!.

They're sole porpuse is to facilitate easier starting of the engine, they glow for about 7 to 10 seconds when cold (Pre Glow) and then again once the engine has started for up to another 10 to 40 seconds (After Glow) to allow for smoother engine operation and reduced smoke.

Make sure your air, fuel and oil filters are clean and all your fluids are fresh.

Jeff Litchfield....man you need some help with posting images...some of these posts with messed up link honestly is annoying.

When doing posting images...first thing is you need a place hosting your pics....unless your running your own web server, you can't just merely insert and image that's on your computer and expect everyone will be able to see it. Go to some place like www.cardomain.com and sign up there. They are an okay place to host your pics. All you have to do is upload them to thier server there. Then all you have to do is get the url of the picture, which you can do by clicking on the picture where you upload it at, then right clicking it and selecting properties. You should see a URL you can use for it.

Now if I can find that gif that show the stick figure walking into a big X...killing himself... :P

It is coming along slowly...after "customizing" a 280ZX pedal assembly to fit, I have come to the realizati0on that it just might not work, so tomarrow I will ride my bike to the local Nissan dealer and see if I can get an OEM one for the max. Otherwise, it will be done next week. As soon as I can figure out how to post pics, I willshow some. I also decided to add a pair of 3.5 in dash speakers, replace the previous owner's 4" door speaks with 6.5", and a pair of 6x9s or whatever fits w/o modification to the rear deck. I can tell any 1st gen max owner that if you want dash speaks, there are already holes in the dash for the 3.5's.

Here's a lead if the dealer can't get what you need : http://www.graytechsoftware.com/garage or email Chris Gray: grayc@rpi.edu He's parting out an '84. I don't remember if it's a 5 speed or not???
Also, http://www.VictoriaBritish.com (1 800 255 0088) Call and ask for their Z car catalogue. They have all the clutch hydraulics from the master cyl. down to the slave cyl. except the solid line(???), but that should be easy to get a length of pipe at an auto parts store and bend.
There are other parts in the VB catalogue that are interchangable (brakes, suspension, fuel components, etc.)

Do you want any photos in the engine bay of the clutch pipe routing or in the footwell of the pedal assembly? If you do e-mail me: lang407@juno.com

Good luck!

There's a guy on the east cost that has been looking for the same thing for a long, long time... the 280zx pedals don't quite fit perfect I guess. :-( Can't help you out though. Mine's an auto. For now I'm leaving it that way

Ummm, get a FSM or something it'll probably show the route they are run. If not, just buy some straight lines and a bending tool and have at it. Dunno why your asking this question if you've fabbed your own pedals.

i was about to say, the 2+2 and Turbo model 280zx cars had larger fly wheels than the N/A 2 seaters.

can you get the numbers stamped into the transmission and engine and i can ask over on the Z forum i go to about it?

i was going to do the same thing since my tranny is different than stock and i need to get a new clutch and i may do a lighter flywheel since it'll be apart
