driving a 5speed?

driving a 5speed?
Lately, I have been experimenting with skipping gears.Sometimes i would shift from 2gear to 4th bypassing 3rd gear. Or when merging on freeway i will be in 3rdgear going up to 3500rpm's and shift into 5th. My question, does this type driving save gas? And will this harm the tranny or something eles in any way????

won't help MPG much and won't hurt tranny, hurts performance a tad, slower acceleration
