87 Max Specs.

I am looking at buying either a automatic(GXE i think) or a 5speed(SE I think) and I am wondering what are the specs for either car, and which one would be a better car holding everything constant (assume they are in the same condition) any opinion would be appreciated.

I'm gonna let my bias shine through here. Definately go for an SE with a 5-speed. I personally don't like this generation's auto, they are heavy and the gear ratios do the car no justice what-so-ever. The 5-speed a lighter, and makes the car much more fun to have IMHO. As far as options, both have features that make them nice. It's really up to you on what you prefer. I just vote for the SE 5-speed!

I have an 86 wagon with the auto tranny... I had the
pleasure to drive an 85 SE with the 5-speed... 5-speed
wins hands down!

That's two votes for the 5-speed!

Thanks guys any opinions out there? I will probably buy one of them with in the next month. I am leaning towards the five speed...just wondering if anyone wants to try to talk me out of it....or hype the five speed up more.

Well, at the crank, no. At the wheels yes. 5-speeds only loose about 15% of its power through the drivetrain, autos look about 20-25% of its power.

I have an 87 GXE that is auot but I am doing a 5spd conversion next month, my opinion is go with the 5spd now so you don't have to do the swap later
