rear suspension install problems

rear suspension install problems
I put in my KYB inserts lastnight, and now I am getting a terrible clanking/rattling noise from the rear shelf where the strut meets the deck. When I replaced the rears I did not use any new parts. The only part I did not put back on was the lock washer for the strut nut because it would not fit on the new KYB. I am switching from a non functioning adjustable system to a non adjustable system.....what did I miss? This is driving me nuts.
*edit* I should also add that once the strut was assembled with the new insert and the spring was back on...the method I used for lining everything up could have been wrong. I got a friend of mine to put the 3 nuts on the top studs while I manuvered it into postition from the bottom...once I had this done the spindle that holds the hub assembly on was not pointing straight out (it was a 9 o'clock rather than where it should have been at 6 o'clock). And to get all of the suspension parts that tie into the bottom of the strut lined up you have to turn it to '6 o'clock'. Therefore I grabed the assembly and turned it from the spindle in order to get all of the parts to line up. is this how you are suposed to do it? Thanks for the help.

Did you replace the bumpstops? Also did you tighten to gland packs are tight as possible? Sounds like you might have some strut alignment issues. On the Chiltons, and I believe the Haynes Manual, there is a section on how to line up the strut mounts. You might want to give it a try. Also Were you sure to put all the plates, etc back for the the stop of the strut/spring assembly?

when you say gland packs...I am assuming you are talking about the nut on top of the insert? No, I did not replace the bump stops and they were nice and worn out....I did not figure I needed to replace those....I will try reading more in my haynes manual at lunch and also I will try to go out and tighten the nuts on the struts....any more ideas are appreciated, but I will try tightening the nuts more
