problems with my 88

i have an 88 max i've just bought back from a buddy. he hurt it pretty bad. i replaced the mass air and the cylinder head temp sensor. those codes are gone and now she runs, but i have a code 22 fuel pump circuit code. it runs really bad cold and when it warms up it runs ok but the idle is really rough and it is lacking a bit of power as well as blowing some black smoke. i don't know what is causing the fuel pump code. i had the injector recall done last year and i tested the fuel pump, it has excellent pressure. the haynes manual is very vauge on what it could be. if you guys could help me out i'd be greatful. thanx.

I wonder if your having a problem with the fuel pressure regulator. That would be the first place to look at.

Since the fuel pump is good, the next place to look is the actual connector in the trunk of the car. Test the upper left port on the female side. Just ground and check for continuity with a multimeter.

Heres the thing the symptoms are either the Idle speed control valve circuit is open or short. Fuel circuit is open or short. So it might be electrical. I personally have no Idea how to fix that. So hopefully something isn't connected correctly and you just need to connect them. Hope this helps
