Tach conversion

I know this is a shot in the dark, but the Sentra doesn't have a tachometer. It has the standard cluster with the speedometer, fuel and water temp. gauges. If I can get an instrument cluster that fits, say off an SE or SE-R, what are the chances that the conversion will be painless? my speedometer is computer-controlled and there is no cable. on each side I have the warning lights (check engine, oil, charge, etc). Nissan used a similar cluster on sentras from 1991 to 1993, where the speedo and water/fuel guages were on opposite sides of what mine is. but on mine, they used the same instrument cluster from 1994 until 1999 or 2000 I think. I think the standard sentras didn't include them, unless you bought an SE or SE-R model. so it's not like it's uncommon. my main concern is (1) no existing wiring for the tachometer, and (2) the harnesses being different, causing stuff not to work right. I guess my best bet would be to look at a FSM for the vehicle I'm taking one off of. I don't have a FSM for the sentra yet, and I don't know where to get one except E-bay, which is where I got the (now retired for service) FSM for the maxima I no longer have.

I know a tach isn't absolutely necessary, cos my 89 sentra didn't have one, and that's the car I learned stick on. but it's a pretty good thing to have and it adds a sporty look.

let me know what you think, if it's even worth trying to do.

Likely the wiring for it is there, or it's a straight plug and play. To save costs, cars that didn't have that option had the wiring for it, because it cost more to make two type of harnesses. So I think it's probably doable.

sweet. I went junkyard hopping but their sentra supply (actually, their whole nissan supply) is extremely limited. they had one 1st gen maxima, a newer stanza, and 2 sentras like mine, basically gutted out. however they must have had over an acre of GM cars, mostly cavaliers, piled up there. LOL. what does that tell ya?

anyway, I was looking and the instrument cluster pre-1994 was not only backwards, but the warning lights are all scattered different from mine. I don't wanna buy one from a different year and risk it not working. but there's one off a 94 SE-R on e-bay. one of these days I'm gonna try it, but a FSM would definitely serve me good. I thought about getting an aftermarket tach, but I think they look queer, and if I'm gonna do that, I may as well buy a civic to go with it, drop it 1/4" from the ground and put a coffee can on the end of the muffler.

94 sentra XE if not mistaken came only with GA16DE engine.. so in that sense, only GA16DE clusters will work.

the G20 and old B13 sentra SE-R came with SR20DE, not too sure if they'll work.

funny how nissan usually make the tachometer standard feature in auto tranny models.
