Transmission wont shift past 2nd gear...

Quick question..
My 85 wagon has about 170k on it, and the other day, it would not shift from 2nd gear into 3rd/4th. I can drive in 2nd gear, but obviously i cant go much b/c once i hit about 40mph, im @ 3500+rpms.
Just wondering if it sounds as if I can just flush it and change the tranny fluid. Also, where is the drain plug, and refill point? I went ot autozone to get a haynes manual, but they were out, so any help would be GREATLY appreciated. Last, if I have to get it swapped, I found one @ cherry-auto.com but i need to select if it was manufactured FROM 5/85 or THRU 4/85. How do i find this out? thanks for all your help..

The date of manufacture of your car is going to be on the inside of the driver's door frame next to the door latch. It will tell you the month/yr of mfr.
I assume you are talking about an automatic as I don't think many wagons would have had manual, if any... The drain plug is facing the front of the car on the right side of the transmission housing. It takes a half inch ratchet inserted into it removing it counter-clockwise (just like a standard bolt). Look for "chia pet" growth on the magnet when you remove it. Any large chunks of metal mean real problems (I know all about this.... ). You will only be able to get about 3 quarts out of the drain, so consider doing an exchange of the fluid, removing the trans cooler line. I replaced my 87 tranny with one from an 85, so I don't know about compatability problems. You do need to know that you have the correct bell housing for the starter location on the new RL4F02A tranny. I found pricing from $150 all the way to $600 for used one. A new one rebuilt can be had for $875 plus shipping plus core charge. Man, is it transmission month or what?!!
