Nissan Maxima 87 clutch separated from air compressor

Hi guys,
I got Nissan Maxima 87, sedan. My air condition went off a month ago. Each time I press the button to turn on the air i would see the clutch trying to engage into the compressor then after couple of squeaks it wont turn and seem just stuck.

I figured that there's no freon left or maybe clutch broke and have not used AC. Now, a month later I started hearing a rubbing noise while driving. I looked and saw that its coming from air compressor. I moved that clutch a little and it stopped. Next thing I started hearing banging noise while driving, I discovered that the clutch just separated from the compressor and now hanging between compressor and body frame of the car.

I tried to push it and succeeded, but it will fall out again...

What to do? What caused it to come off? In the book i have not found any info on the part. Do i have to go to the junk yard and try to get whole compressor? This thing wont stay in the compressor. What would you advise to do to fix this?

Thanks

Hmmm, I'd say going to a junkyard and pulling a compressor is the easiest route....but you have to make sure the compressor is in good shape. I've never had that problem with the a/c clutch, so I'm unsure if your situation is repairable or not. You might be able just to grab a clutch and replace it....but someone how I got a feeling that won't do.

Thanks for reply. Is it normal though, that you can pull the clutch out by hand if compressor is good? Or it broke off and that's why its now falling out even though I push it back in?

Well, when dealing with pullies, you shouldn't be able to pull them off by hand. So that's a good sign something is wrong.

I have a 87 automatic, and My A.C. compressor just froze up on me the other day while driving, and Now I can here a rubbing sound when at idle comming from the compressor, And it will stall the engine if I dont keep the idle up high enough. Is there a way to lube the compressor or does it need replacing?

My compressor froze up and wouldnt work, then a month later the clutch fell out and now handing between body and compressor. I put it back in, but it does not hold long anyway...Good thing is that it does not do anything to my engine.

I dont think the compressor can be lubed or anything...
