AT filter

well is the tranny actually giving you problems? I understand your dilemma, but it's like turboast said, you may as well buy a new tranny. I'd just make sure the fluid is clean red - not brown or black with a burned smell. I've heard wonderful things about lucas and seafoam trans-tune to clean out older transmissions. have you considered a power flush? most garages around here do it for about $100. I've heard they're great, but I've also heard that they can hurt older trannys that may have worn parts. I think it's at least worth considering and getting some better advice. a power-flush should clean out anything stuck in the filter for about 1/10th of the cost of replacing it...
in some cars, like my saturn, the tranny filter was external, just like an oil filter. and in my blazer, all you hafta do is drop the pan and the filter's right there... push a new one on, put some form-a-gasket around the pan, bolt 'er back on. I can't believe anyone would make it this difficult to get to. especially when they claim you should do it every 30k. that's more often than a timing belt!

every 30? no way thats just how often the fluid should be changed, at work we will change the filter in a car that has a dropable pan but on our cars it seems to be gotten to from the top.

sorry to bastardize the sticky, but what fluid should i run on an 88? should i look for something synthetic or just go with stock from the dealership? also, when the car is really really cold, sometimes the transmission will refuse to make the 1-2 shift and will just stay in first for as long as it feels like.

thye have tried to make it so it shifts smoothly, some of my upper gears dont even feel like they shift, but just use regular atf, mabe try some lucas stuff.
i've use half of a bottle on mine and it helped

You add thru the dipstick like blackmaxima88 said. Just remember a little bit goes a long way. The book may say to add 5 qts, but start at 2.5. If the car takes regular and u try to switch to synthetic, you may find that the synthetic is too thin and doesn't do anything but cause problems. As for power flushes, if you have over 100,000 miles on your car and haven't ha it done before DON'T!!! I work at one of those shops that does it and trust me, we won't even touch a car with that many miles that hasn't had it done before. You find out the hard way about any leaks. Just something to think about...

hey thanks for the advice... my blazer's about to roll to 200,000 (impressive for a GM product) and I've been thinkin about a power flush... I guess now I won't.. I'll just change the fluid and filter and hope that the new fluid flushes out the old fluid. they make additives like lucas and seafoam trans-tune to clean stuff. anyone try them yet?
as for synthetic vs. non synthetic, I've never had an oil leak issue in my sentra until I switched to maxlife synthetic, and since I did that, it loses about 1-1.5 quarts a week... whatever's leaking is major and I think it's behind the timing cover, and all the nice NEW drivebelts I put on there are oil-soaked...so just use what you've been using, your car will be happier...

we've got a transmission machine at work and its no power flusing machine, it uses what ever pressure comming into the cooler to take fluid out and you match it oing in, i've noticed alot of power flushe things force a bunch of stuff in and then it goes poop.
some thing with coolant except we have to suck it out but we dont force it in either we let the vaccum we created to suck the new stuff in, kinda different from other places but i dont think i'll be working there much longer, i kinda.....absoultly hate it.
especially when some of the mileages we are given and kinda, over exagerated.
15,000 for a fuel filter...uhhhhh no i dont think so. mine still had the factory filter, nissan logo and everything and its was fine, i often wonder if the one i put on is worse.

If u've switched to a synthetic oil and now it leaks.... If it's leaking froma bunch of little places then switch to a "high mileage" oil. 10w-30 is usually a good grade (it won't hurt even if the car says 5w-30; it's just a thicker grade). The advantage to the HM is that it can plug up MINOR leaks. If there's major leak than u'd probably b better off replacing what ever is leaking - usually the gasket around the oil pan or a head gasket. At least, those are the two most common leaks at my job.
Fuel filters kind of deped on the car. Some cars run great with getting their FF's changed every 15, 000; some don't need it until 25, 000 or 50,000. It all kinda depends on what kind of driving u do and what kind of gas u use. The more crude the gas - the more u may nee to change the filter. I've seen Jeeps come in with fuel filters after 12,000 miles and when we change the fuel filter there's dark brown stuff coming out (don't ask me to tell u what it is cause I'm really not even sure). Then again I've seen Toyota Camrys come in with 50,000 before they get their FFs done and they're pretty clean still. Unfortunately u'll never know the condition until u take it off and (as with most filters) at that point u kind of have to replace it.
If the FF seems to be giving u a problem then make sure that the size is right, and check the brand. We all know that some brands use the worse quality materials to make their products, the again some brands may work on one car and not the other. Who knows???
Hope this all helps.

Hmmmm, don't think I can say I've ever heard of that brand around here. Like I said before though - product quality is everything.... If the fact that u only paid $1 says anything (we pay anywhere from $15 - $50 for ours at work - straight from the factory) then u may wanna rethink the one you got. Fortunately u didn't spend that much to begine with. Try something a little more expense - preferably a name brand that is more heard of (not saying that Mighty isn't one). Maybe Slick50? I think Pennzoil and Gumout even have FFs. I can't remember the name of the ones we use at work but I know I've neer heard of a cust (or coworker for that matter) complaining about there being any problem. I'll have to do some checking..... Lemme do some cheking and I'll let you know.
