88 max aod help

88 max aod,has anyone been able to get around the issue of not going into overdrive until the car reaches a certain temp?i enjoy the max,but its rough on fuel.is there anyway to get around this issue,if i let it idle,it cools down on the interstate and then jumps out of o.d to warm back up.thanx

It's not really an "issue" with these tranny's, but that is the way Nissan designed them. Something about preventing OD from engaging below a certain temperature to prevent damage to the tranny, so I feel it's best left that way. In cold weather mine kicks in and out of OD on the highway, but I've gotten used to it. You could always just block a portion of the rad with cardboard if it really bothers you, then it would stay runing a bit warmer at idle though.

I was also going to recomend some cardboard over the radiator to keep it hotter.....or you could put a hotter thermostat in (if its even available...but I would NEVER recomend doing this)

The OE thermostat on our (2nd gen) cars opens at 170F, I believe. Usually parts stores offer two different temps, with the hotter ones being like 195. In the winter it's ok, cuz you'll get heat sooner from a colder engine, but like cardana said in summer it'll probably be bad. I suppose you could add more water to the coolant mixture as well.
