Need some advice....

So it's that time when I have to start thinking long term about what I'm gonna do with my car. It needs a steering rack and front calipers. As far as I know, Nissan put the timing belt on in Japan. My sunroof leaks like bizzotch (still can't find those darn rear drains ). The AAV needs attention, the fuel pressure regulator leaks when cold, and the O2 probably only speaks Japanese like the t-belt. I have a spark plugged seized in the #1 cylinder. And my trunk won't close. Besides, I really want a 5-speed.

I love my car, but I definitely can't afford all those repairs. I don't have a garage--I live in an apartment with a gravel parking lot, limited tools and repair knowledge, so the idea of fixing all that stuff myself makes me feel dizzy.

Now if I try really hard and save some money, I could probably afford a nice shiny 4th gen by the end of the spring. Of course I could try really hard to save and have the nicest 2nd gen in Philly instead. I guess the question is, how much is the nicest 2nd gen in Philly really worth? I need a reliable car; I can't set out on a road trip to Buffalo and worry that I have to call out of work cuz something or other on my car is broken.

And while the Max is bed ridden, I have to drive my bro's old '91 Regal. That sux even more, cuz driving that thing is perhaps worse than death.

well just go by thing that can wait or not, with my it would be like this

no wait:

TIMING BELT
calipers
pressure regulator

wait:
AAV
O2
spark plug
Sunroof (get a towel)

not sure:

steering rack
every car and/or truck i have owned (all 2 of them) havent needed either or because 1: it had no fancy power steering and was basicly a iron rod connected to a steering box connected to the wheels or 2: my maxima hasnt had that problem yet.

thats just how i see it. the car will run with a bad aav and o2 for a long while it just may be a little rough, an o2 is cheap though

Well, if you have the money, I recommend a 4th gen if you want something decent, and well priced. Many of them can now be had for around 5-6k.

Yeah just think if you have about 9 to 10k get a late 4th gen or early, and they can be had nicely from 5k-9k and just dump the rest into mods. Thats my plan one of these days. The key is one of these days, so its gonna be a little while. Ill be keeping my 2nd gen of course.

Hi. I still have the calipers, o2 sensor, and fuel regulator on my 87 i am parting out. $100 for all + $20 shipping. Let me know. The caliper replace is not difficult to do nor is the fuel regulator. That should get you back on the road. You should be able to get a pipe or something on your ratchet to free that spark plug. Spray some wd40 down in there first. I woiuld have a mechanic do the timing belt - replace the water pump at the same time since it's in the same location of what has to be taken apart. Good luck.

Hey everyone...
I was gone for a few days for the holiday so thanks for the advice. I think for now I'll just let it sit aside and drive my bro's Regal til the spring. It's nice having an alternative car to drive, so I'm lucky in that regard. I'll probably try to save some money and see where I am in a few months. Ideally, I'd like to keep my ride. I really have missed it. But boy would a 4th gen be nice.

Jos, I didn't forgot, but right now I'm reluctant to put ANYTHING into it until I have some cash and know better what I want to do with it.

Thanks again everyone.
