LD28 Diesel
I wouldn't be able to comment on the reliability or serviceability too much. They tend to be quite rare. However, if the L24E's reliable is an indication....I'm pretty sure that the LD28 would be very reliable as well.

The LD28 Nissan diesel is a very reliable engine. They will go to at least 300k miles and if you really take care of it, you can get 400-500k out of one. The other thing is when compared to the other diesels of that decade, the Maxima had very good power and was not slow at all. It is an OHC 6 cylinder and creates 80 HP. But when you're driving down the road in one it sure doesn't feel like 80, but more like 100. In addition to the power, they still get great fuel mileage and you can expect at least 28 mpg out of an automatic transmission. In most cases if you have one with low mileage, you can expect to be in the 30's on city mpg and highway mpg. They are not hard to work on and don't have the pounds of electronics like the new diesels of today have. When it comes to getting a technician to work on the LD28 in a Maxima, I would just take it to a highly trained mechanic or better yet work on it myself.
