fuel injectors

I have a 87maxima that the engine went bad on me so i had to change the engine.Ever since i chaneg it its been problems for me.First,it has a cold start problem which even after modifying the air regullator doesn't help. Then i took it to the dealers to have an air flow meter changed and the told me that my injectors were leaking which is true you can smell the gas when am trying to start easpecially in cold weather.Since there was a recall on this they told me that my original engine had already had the recall done and that i should look for another car vin number that has not yet been done the recall so they can do it for free.I have been looking but to no avail.I was just wondering if anyone has such a vin number or give me another idea as to how to go about it.I would do it myself but just one injector cost about $80.My other qeustion is could that be the reason for the cold start or there is more to it than meets the eye.

I would try going to a junkyard and writing VINs down. I would not want to get one from a car that is running thats not yours just because you may be screwing future owners out of getting the service performed. MY .02

Could someone please tell me if the injectors might be the cause of a cold start.

Yup, basically this is how it works. The injector works more efficiently when fuel is atomamized/sprayed. Over time, the injector will develop carbon build up, or build up of crap that is in the fuel that doesn't get caught by the fuel filter. When this happens, it causes the injector to dribble instead of spray. Usually when that happens, that particular cylinder starts to lean out. Dribble fuel doesn't mix with air as well....and not all of the intended amount of fuel is delivered. This could make the car run crappy, as well as hard to start. A leaking injector will do that as well.

Am guessing the way to fix that is to have all six of them replaced?

if they are not leaking I would just find a local shop that does the BG fuel system servicing....it usually runs about $100, if you are not leaking then I would just have them cleaned.

And you clean them by adding that stuff in the gas tank or there is another way.

Its a multi step process....stuff is added to the gas but the whole fuel system is hooked up to a machine and it is clened....its a process, its more than adding something to the gas tank.

I've got the injectors from my '87 that were replaced by Nissan a year ago. I am parting out the car due to a blown head gasket, radiator, etc. I can pull the six with the rails. $120 for the whole lot. Email me at jsbsssjs@aol.com if interested.

My guess is that it's not the injectors perse. But the rubber o-rings that seal the injectors. If they are old/worn/torn, it will allow gas to either leak out of the top of the rail or leak past the injector and into the head(causing a rich run problem)

If you smell gas, it's probably leaking out of the rail. Or you have a leak in one or more of the fuel injector hose.

I believe it was 1984-1988. I don't know if the 1984 RWD were involved (even though there were a few reports of the injectors leaking then and in some cases starting fires). Best way to check, go to your dealer or check out the NHTSA website, and enter/check your VIN number. Hope this helps

I think it was only second gens. You dealer can tell you if it has been done, or you can call 1-800-NISSAN1 and they can also tell you in your VIN has been thru the recall.
