starting problem

Am going to tell you guys what i did cause am trying to figure out by myself but can't get it.Here goes the cause of events leading to the problem. My had (87max)had a cold start problem and on this day it was in the lower 20s in the morning and i was trying to start her up.The engine would try to pick up but still didn't so i gave her gas.I knew she was going to give me a had time since it was very cold but still she didn't pick up.I guess i was doing this for so long that now the engine will not even spin and all i heard was a clank noise am thinking from the starter.Since it was too cold for me to mess with and didn't want to be late for work,i left it and got my pickup truck.A few days later i went back to it and try to start it.My battery had already gone dead so tried jumpstarting it.But all i heard was the same clink fromthe starter so i had an extra old starter from a 85 max put in and it tried to start and i managed to start and drove it around for about 30min.But when i turned it off it wount start up again.Checked battery, starter, fuses everything looked good.So yesterday got another starter from the junk yard and the same story goes, wount start at all.The starter spins when i apply power to it direct but wount spins when i try to start the car.All i hear is the clink from the starter and the engine don't spin.Where do i start looking please.

I'd first check the battery. take it in to where it's warm and slowly charge it up. batteries don't charge when they're cold. when I got my car stuck in a blizzard we had 2 years ago, I left my flashers on and came back to a dead battery. we barely managed to jump it, but after driving the thing for almost 45 minutes, I shut it off and got nothing when I tried to restart it. take the battery out, inside somewhere where it's warm, and try charging it. how old is the battery?

also, check the battery cables. make sure they're tight. other than that, only thing I can think of is maybe the engine is partially siezed?

but first, I'd charge the battery up and have it professionally load tested somewhere.

engine partially siezed, as in engine is about to become siezed, but not there quite yet, so there's some extra effort needed for the starter to spin the flywheel. I think you can take a socket over the crankshaft nut and put a 1/2" drive breaker bar on it and turn it (with the tranny in neutral or park) to feel if there's extra resistance... but don't quote me on it.

but like I said, have the battery load tested before you assume there's engine trouble. also take the starter off and check the flywheel. if it's missing some teeth, the clicking and chattering noise you hear is the starter turning but only hitting broken teeth on the flywheel. make sure the bolts that hold the starter to the engine are tight too, cos that's the starter's only source of ground and a bad connection here is like having a loose battery cable.

if you have a voltmeter, you can hook it to the battery terminals (or you can use the voltmeter gauge in your instrument cluster for a general reference) and try to crank it. if the voltage drops below maybe 9.5 or 10, you've got an excessive load or a bad starter.
