I just bought a 1987 Maxima off of my great-aunt (she had to support her gambling habbit). It only has 90k mi on it, and she's had a ton of work done to it.

I am just wondering which one it is: GXE or SE?

It has an analog spedo, but a chrome grille and tons o' chrome all over the place. I tried decoding the VIN, but that didn't reveal the trim.

The GXE came with a digital spedo, right? Maybe the chrome grill was just swapped from a junk yard.

Which max am I now a proud owner of?

Thanks,

If your car has the chrome trim around the windows , the keyless entry on the doors and the pillow seats it is a GXE. SE had the black window trim, leather wrapped steering wheel, the manual adjustable shocks, the spoiler and the high backed sport seats and usually came in 5 speed although auto was available. GXE only was available in auto but to get the digital dash you had to purchase the electronics package which was only available with the leather seating package.

It does have chrome around the windows. Keyless entry is the little keypad, right? Well I don't have that. What are pillow seats?

No leather on the steering wheel and no spoiler (where can I get one of those?)

Also, does the little security light on the dash mean I have an alarm?

Thank you for your time,

If you have a front air dam with fog lights and a rear spoiler and adjustable shocks, than you have a SE.

I think its a GXE. Not all GXE's came with a keyless entry, and voice warning system. 85% of all 87-88 were Spanish imports to the US, these cars have different radios (i.e.-the full-half mast antenna feature), no keyless entry system, and no voice warning system. Otherwise all 87-88 models are identical. But the one noticable difference in the SE and GXE is the chrome trim on the windows. :-)
