Servicing the LD28

Hi all. You've been so helpful regarding the diesel. I was curious, when the diesel needs servicing, do you do it yourself, if you can or take it to a Nissan dealership or general mechanic, especially when it comes to the timing belt for the fuel injection system and adjusting the valves? If you don't do the service yourself, what have you been charged to have it done for you? Thanks again.

When it comes to doing maintenence on the LD28 it usually involves the low maintenence of any good diesel engine. The LD28 diesel is a great, reliable powerplant. The only thing that would have made it a better designed engine would be if it had a timing chain instead of a timing belt. In my opinion a timing belt seems to be a design suited for a light duty engine. But in the case of most 80's Japanese diesel vehicles that is what they used. For the timing belt and fuel injection service, I wouldn't hesitate to take it to a pro mechanic if you don't have mechanical abilities for that large of a job. I know those should be done accurately and I wouldn't risk the damage of my already reliable diesel engine.

Hey, thanks for the response. That's what I thought, it wouldn't be too much maintenance. Who would you suggest a diesel owner takes his/her car too? (A dealer or can a general mechanic do the repair work?) By the way, I thought the LD28 had a timing chain, and the fuel injection pump was the one with the timing belt? :}

Glad I could help. I would take the car to a general mechanic because I believe that the dealer would charge way too much money. For someone who needs a mechanic for their vehicle work I would try to become a good customer and get to know the mechanic well so I wouldn't happen to get overcharged by him. But in my case I would do my own mechanic work. In my above reply where I stated a Maxima diesel has a timing belt I did mean for the fuel injection pump.
