Tachometer sticks at 2.5-3k

anybody know anything about tachometers? I got one and it likes to stick around 2500-3000. When the ignition is off, it's at 0, but as soon as you go to start the engine, it shoots up and stays there. it works normally when the RPMs are over 3k, but since it's an automatic, that seldom happens. sometimes flicking the clear cover over the instrument cluster causes it to jump down a little. there have been 2 separate, isolated times when the tach has worked properly. about all I know about tachs is that they're wired into the coil somehow. I'm thinking about taking out the cluster and moving the needle by hand to see if it's lodged in place. but the fact that it returns to 0 when you turn the key off (or pull the instrument panel fuse) leads me to believe it may be a wiring problem. would anyone have any better suggestions?

yes, they're both red, and exactly identical, except the LE has a spoiler and american racing rims...

i'm guessing if it sticks at one spot while its on but drops when the car goes off its what ever sensor that connects to where the RPM is being read from that has gone bad...

just kinda an educated guess there...i hope thats understandable

Your tach probably reads off the ECU which in turn reads off the CAS. The likelihood your CAS and ECU are bad is probably low if the motor runs. So most likely it's the gauge itself.
