i am having a brain fart(timing related)

ok for some reason today when i went out to adjust my timing back to good after i adjusted everything to help it run with a bad MAF....i could not rember which was was advancing the timing and which was was retarding?

so, from the front of the car looking down on the distributer, which way is advancing and retarding?

would really like to know because my timing is too retarded right now (and i mean the brain retarded)

I think clockwise advances it. At any rate, just turn it a bit and when the engine speeds up it's advancing. If it slows down it's retarding more. If you don't have a timing light, just advance it a bit at a time and then take it for a burn between adjustments. When you get pinging back it off a hair till it stops and you're done.
