The old hotness

well
I haven't been here for awhile. The max is in the backyard still waiting on a trany. My mom wants it out by this weekend. So I either have to fix it or junk it. I think its the gasket that houses the valve body. Because I can see it hanging from the trany.
Oh well Just an update maybe they'll make me scrap it so if they do let me know what parts ya'll might need, I may have no choice so...

Sarin if youre turbo'd right now come to cali. We can race! Im calling you out.

Still waiting for the turbo. KALSC has been pretty busy and hasn't been able to ship it to me yet.

It would be worth it to fix just long enough to race you man.
Thats all that keeps me from scrapping the max. And all the parts I bought that still need to go on it. Soon itll be done

I was checking the site that sells the overhaul kit for the trany, and I noticed they also offer a valve body mod. It is supposed to eliminate the sorry 1-2 shift that our tranys are notorious for. Anyone else try this yet?

Are you talking about the "slide-bump" 1-2 shifting? All it is, is the removal of one spring in the servo accumulator. Very easy to do. I don't know about any valve body modification, but according to the technical bulletin by Sonnax (below link), there apparently hasn't been a lot of success. I performed the spring removal they talk about and I didn't like the way it shifted so fast. It was like, 1..2.............3..............4. Too fast. Almost like 1st was nonexistent. Try it for yourself, though. PS. I have had a little experience with the tranny swap. I bought mine for $150 at a local salvage yard, but I don't know how long it will last due to it having 150K on it already. I do know of a site that has totally rebuilt units for $895. Not too bad if you are sure you are going to keep her. She loves you, you know? Why would you dump her that way after all of these years? You brute! Ha! Stay in contact, I can help via email if you need it.

My car has had this done then. My car has always had a very fast 1st-2nd gear shift like it is none existent unless I get on it. I thought there was something wrong with my tranny, I guess not. I still would like to get a new one though. If I can get something open on a weekend I just might be able to pick up a certain car with a new one in it. Been too busy lately. And Ive never been this busy on weekends. You know summer is here. Anyway, if that was the fix for it it kind of sucks you dont get to feel the pull of the car because it shifts too damn fast. Now on occasion it will shift alittle later making it feel very sporty. I feel like a little kid getting a treat when my car does this. It doesnt slip either it goes into gear nicely.

They really test their trannys well before shipping with a hydraulic and pressure test. You can read about them on their site. But, you also have to pay like, $300 shipping.

The link you posted for the valve body problems doesn't seem to be related to the 1-2 slide/bump fix. It looks like it fixes other problems. I've had one of these trannys apart before. I am a pretty good mechanic as long as I research and study my books. You definately need to get the trans repair manual and look at it first. I was WAY over my head with this repair. There are literally hundreds of parts inside and and some of them require very critical tolerances needing specialized equipment. Remember, one frickin' part wrong and you've got problems. That means 2 days of labor pulling it out and back in again. The valve body itself is more complicated than ANY carburator. Trust me. Holler at me if I can give you any more advice. I am leaving out of town Saturday on a week's vacation.

Thanks man

I have the repair manual. Ive been reading it for weeks now. Im still gonna need help though. Thanks for offering. The parts should be here next week some time.

Those tranys sound nice but 1100 is way too much.

I think Im gonna get the valve body mod, and a cooler.

update

You know root canals are not cheap. So instead of parts I had to do that. Today though I got paid so Im ordering the trany rebuild kit, trany cooler, and the valve body mod. Im looking at about 260$ when all is said and done. Then I need new front axle, and probably a cherry picker. Thats in case I get more cash for the turbo. My goal is to drive an automatic with some power. I love driving stick but going from 150hp and 160tq to 115hp and 100tq sucks *****. Also auto would save me from the madness of rush hour. Anyone know what a parts rack would look like? I need one for the trany rebuild, so I need to know a good design for one.
Thanks in advance

PS. Maximase86 we will race, oh yes we will!

Yep, been in Sarin's car. It goes like stink! Then we took a rip back to his place in our own cars, and he pulled away from me pretty good. But I had three people in there and about 300 pounds of luggage and crap. I know I would have given him a run for the money if I didn't have all the extra weight! Mine goes pretty damn good too! But if it involved a few quick corners, I don't think any of us would stand a chance. His handles like a train on rails. Seriously!

hehehe, the 4th gen don't count Carson! Else I'd get Ian in on it and we'd all lose!

Wylie car sure did pretty well with all the extra weight.

I dont think its my 1st gear is short. I think its my second gear one is. Atleast to me it is with normal driving. When accelerating of course it gets longer in time but I dont know sometimes I wish it didnt shift at the time it does shift at.

I'm talking about the second gen. Its running a little bit better now, than when I took it to the track....I screwed with the timing at the track and it actually ran more crappy than it does with stock timing...and I ran a 16.3@85
