low idle
As the cold weather is comming ( at least in Canada ) the old girl needs to warm up longer before I can move it. My 69 mini has a manual choke, my max does not. When I start the max it idles very low (depending on how cold it is out side). Lower outside temp , lower idle. hot outside, fast idle. this hapens all the time. Does my car have some kind of auto choke? how do I test it? or fix it?

You should have a air valve that bumps idle up when cold. IIRC, it looks the same as that on the VG. It's basically sort of conical in design. You might try doing the fix in the stickies, or replacing it (about $70). That in a sense is your "auto-choke". It seems pretty common for those to get out and it makes startup when it's cold out more difficult.

so I took the air valve off and had a look at it.
the book tells me it should be in the open position until the car gets to 176F then it closes. It was a barely open when cold. so I stuck in the freezer. It open 1/4. I quickly put it in the car. The result ,, I got a faster idle. not much,,,, but faster.
thanks Brent

there is a sticky on " air regulator repair for a 2nd gen" and it also works for 1st gen. now about the heater in the valve. When you turn the car to the run position you hear the pump come on for a sec or two. there are two wires on the air reg ,one goes to the fuel pump relay and the other one goes the ECU. the heater in the air reg gets its power form the fuel pump relay. but is only stays on when you hear the fuel pump come on when you turn the key to the run position.
How can this heat the valve up in a sec or two?
Can someone test there car to see if they get the same results
Am I missing something here?
Can someone explain how or why it works this way?
Cheers Brent

So when you turn to key to one, the pump primes for a few seconds to get fuel pressure to where it needs to be when starting. When you start the car, the pump will kick in again. I assume they did this so that way you don't completely heat the valve up and have trouble keeping the idle up.
