Here are pics of my intake setup. This also shows my Hayden 404 trans cooler, custom made fstb that works better than the 7 dollar ebay ones. Oh and a dirty engine at which I will be coming around to clean soon.

Would you please post the part # for that K&N cone filter? I'm carefully considering buying the same part. If you'd post a link, that'll be great.

Well, the only difference with the tranny cooler is that Im sure I wouldnt have had my transmission still going this long.It does get the fluid cooler and it does its job good. This 404 Hayden tranny cooler was intended for the big RV's so this is supposedly overkill for a car of the size.

The intake is louder considering I never was able to hear the intake like this before. I love it. It starts to growl at about half throttle when on the road. When I go WOT I love it. The cool thing about this is under normal driving conditions you cant hear it. Sometimes during take off I can alittle but thats still just a small amount. While I had everything off I also cleaned up the throttle body some. It wasnt nasty but it wasnt good either. I just used some WD40 on a rag and cleaned as much of it as I could in there. Throttle response has improved, and acceleration is abit more aggressive now. Hopefully I can come accross the 300zx MAF and ECU soon so I can test run that as well.

Sarin: LOL! Itll come with time. I think is what I might do is once I get tired of this set up Ill run the full CAI. I originally wanted to use more pieces to run it where the battery was but thatd mean Id have to relocate the battery. Something I dont want to do at this moment. So for now this suffices.

yeah the filter number....ummmm I forget, it is some weird size with a small base because we do not have much room in our fender well....its some pretty custom deal, its not one you are going to find on ebay. I ordered mine from a speciality store. I am sure you could get advanced to get you one, because they can order them by deminsions.

Oh yeah.....drill the fender

If you buy a 300 zx ECU and a MAS and hook it up to the maxima it wont hurt it? Do you have to buy the same year of your car as the 300 zx? Will it affect performance? I knew the 300 zx motor was the same as the maxima. Also what type of of tubing did you use to make your CAI? Where did you buy it? Was it really diffucult to do?

Nope it wasnt difficult. The CAI was made by a member here on the org for a select amount of members. I was just able to get it from one of those members when they sold their car. It wasnt hard at all. I just followed the instructions Sarin left for me to remove the factory stuff and went to town. I do not know what kind of tubing it was made out of. Im sure you could replicate your own with some pvc piping or exhaust piping or something.

300ZX ECU AND MAF: No, it wont hurt the maxima at all. In fact it has a more aggressive air and fuel mapping. So you should net some gains. All the 240 guys and other owners of the 200sx's from the late 80's are doing this. It is a common mod for the VG30E that was not in the 300zx's. Ive been reading up on this a lot. Yes we need it for the same year if you can find it. Although further reading has indicated that the MAFS from the 86-89 300zx's were the same from what I was reading. I would suggest getting the same year as your car for both just for compatibility reasons. The 300zx Fuel filter is good because it is bigger. It can hold more fuel in it. Thats the only signifying thing I see it good for. And it is plug and play for our cars. The NISMO thermostat though, I just discovered today. They are available for the 300zx non turbo VG30E which is our cars engine. It opens up at 144 degrees instead of the standard 169-170 degrees most come with. It is not only at courtesy nissan but at other stores on the internet. This mod is also a common mod among the 300zx owners of our cars years.

So I just need to buy a 1987 non turbo automatic 300zx ecu and 1987 300zx non tubro thermastat, and a 1987 300 zx fuel filter? I need to change my thermastat anways and that 300 zx one that opens at 144 degrees sounds nice. Do you have to special order that thermastat at the nissan dealer? The MAF sensor on my car is new so do I really need to get one from a 300zx? Is it just plug in the 300zx ecu or do I have to mess with the pins to match up with the maximas? I never knew that you could interchage parts from the 300zx thats so neat. I learn new things ever time I log in this site.

If you get the 300zx one you will need the ECU for compatibility. You dont have to get this stuff but you can. The Thermostat you may have to order special. Not sure if they have it in their stock but they should since it is a nismo part. It should be around 55 bucks.

Hey don't forget to recalibrate the MAF in mode II. Also consider doing the 60mm TB, those 2 mods will make the car feel alot more powerful. I know that on my old car anyone in my family that drove it noticed the difference.

I can try to find it at home. I do not have a scanner, but I could type out the whole slip if you like. It looks just like yours except my MPH was a mile or two faster. I turned my timing up for the race, which screwed me up...once I turned the timing back after the race the car felt much faster...oh well. I only took the spare out of the car for weight reduction. I am guessing I could have run a 15.9 if I would have made a pass on stock timing and got my 60' down to 2.2x. Anyway I'll look for the slip if you are really want to know all the details. My mods at the time were CAI, 2.25" cat back exhasut, and a stanza TB.

"If you get the 300zx one you will need the ECU for compatibility." That Max88q made no sense to me lol. So buy a compatiable year same transmission and its nonturbo. No tinkering just plug it in the 300zx ecu in the place of the maximas?

Nope only in the FSM. You can get them off of ebay. I need to get a new one mine is all kinds of old now. It still does its part though. Helped me out with a relay problem on the fans not too long ago.

From what I am reading though I think you got the idea. Same year MAF and ECU nonturbo.

Just tested my car out tonight. And man Ive never seen it hit 60 so fast in my life. I got scared for a whole minute, lol. I noticed I lost alittle low end torque but up top man this thing gets up. That intake has helped quite abit I believe. You cant feel it off of a normal take off or even a little subtle one. You floor that sucker and let the RPM rise.... thats when you feel/see the difference. This was just with the intake setup. I have no Z parts yet nor a calibration.

I feel the same thing with my basic HAI, but mainly its on cold days or nights. The boost that I feel is mainly around 2500 to 4000 RPM just about. Would the intake setup you have help out a bit more, or would I get around the same boost in power installing a high flow filter? And is your handling a bit better with the fstb installed?

Well, I dont know how yours is set up. Is it just the air filter with the factory piping? If so I wouldnt know. I went straight from factory to this new setup. Im sure it would though because with mine theres no twists and bends, just straight through induction. The fstb is a must but you gotta find one that isnt cheap IMO. The ones on ebay you need to watch out for. Some are built out of the material my custom one was made from then the one from ebay I got sucked. It was mainly more of a show than go which sucked. So, I took it off because of that. But it makes the car feel more planet. Granted when I had the ADDCO RSB installed man this car felt good. I took it off because I bent one of the brackets when turning. Im going ot reinstall it eventually. I miss that extra handling.

my HAI is just what you tried with the stock airbox before this setup, so I think yours would add some more power. What car did you get the fstb from?

The perfect fit FSTB is from a 93-97 Nissan Altima. Is all we would need to do is drill out the outer hole on each bracket to the strut housing and it is a perfect fit. Just make sure if and when you do get one that it is a good sturdy one. I got what I paid for with the other one from ebay so be careful.

SuraTT: There is suppose to be two but the midsection was made with one. As you can see I just added a breather filter to my AAV hose and called it a day. My box is not connected up to mine. The only thing still in the car is the resonator where the AAV was bolted on to. You cant even tell that portion is there.

87 Legram:The strut brace works very well actually. It was built by Ari aka Nismo87se. I purchased it from him a long while back. He had it on his car until his car got messed up so I bought it from him. Im proud of it. It may look ghetto but the damn thing actually works.

Just go searching for 93-97 Nissan Altima FSTB's. Im sure you are capable of finding something. The ebay one I had is all for looks, it had no purpose. My car sucked in the turns with that thing.

Nope I got mine from Autozone. 15 bucks Go there and look for the one I listed in my original posting. I was suppose to get one from Ebay but I decided not to do it and wanted to try the Autozone one out. It fits perfectly. It is a metal one from Autozone.

The reason I was asking is because K&N sells universal filters that are soldb y dminisons, so all I would need is one with a 3' base right? I currently have a short ram intake with an adapter and cheap "hi-flow" cone filter from Auto Zone. I want the K&N filter.

Here's a link to the entire page:
http://www.knfilters.com/search/univcone.aspx

And here's a link to a cone filter that is smimlar to max88g's:
http://www.knfilters.com/search/prod...x?Prod=RF-1039

I was also looking at these Apollo universal cold air intake filters:
http://www.knfilters.com/universal/apollo.htm

Is it possible to retro fit those apollo's for our maximas? They look damn sexy!

What do you all think?

hey max88q,

would that kind of cooler be good for a 3rd gen vg trans?

because the trans on the 3rd gen will wear out faster then the second gen trans,

I would recommend a tranny cooler on any automatic 6-cylinder car. Just the fact it help with the duration of the tranny it's worth each penny...and even more so modded.

David: The very top one is the similar to the one I used for the CAI. Unless you plan on using the ones you posted for a HAI, I don't know if they would benefit a CAI much.

Nice job with the intake. I am also pleased that you got a tranny cooler for your car. They help out a ton. I actually sell tranny cooler/filter kits for the 3000GT/Stealth and I have one of them on my car. It's nice to see temps 30 degrees lower than they normally would be.

If you wanted to go for overkill, you could install a filter inline for added protection, but I don't think it would be necessary for you.
